McPhee scores 21 points to lead Stanford women over USC

UCLA routs Cal; Ionescu sets triple-double mark

Brittany McPhee had 21 points, eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals to lead the Stanford women to a 72-65 win over USC on Sunday at Maples Pavilion.

Alanna Smith and Kiana Williams added 13 points each for the Cardinal (8-6, 2-0 Pac-12), and Marta Sniezek had 10 rebounds. McPhee has 74 points in three games since missing nine with an injury.

USC led by as many as 12 in the first quarter and was up 3433, but Smith opened the second half with a 3-pointer and the Cardinal never trailed again. McPhee hit a jumper in the final minute of the third quarter to make it 5350 and opened the fourth quarter with a layup and 3-pointer for an eight point lead. She also had back-to-back inside buckets after the Trojans got within five with under two minutes to go.

Sadie Edwards had 20 points for the Trojans (10-3, 0-2). Aliyah Mazyck added 18 with eight rebounds, and Minyon Moore scored 17. UCLA 82, CAL 46 >> Monique Billings scored 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds for her third straight double-double, and the No. 11 Bruins crushed the 20th-ranked Bears at Haas Pavilion.

Kristine Anigwe opened Pac12 play with back-to back double-doubles to pace Cal (10-3, 1-1 Pac-12). She had 15 points and 10 rebounds, Asha Thomas added 12 points and Mikayla Cowling had 11 points and nine rebounds. The Golden Bears were just 1 of 12 from 3-point range.

Jordin Canada, who is third in the NCAA in assists (5.8), had 16 points and nine assists for UCLA (10-3, 1-1). Kennedy Burke added 10 points, five assists and four steals as the Bruins had 26 assists on 34 field goals.

The Bruins finished the second quarter on a 13-1 run for a 34-19 halftime lead. The Bears were held without a field goal for 9:25 of the second quarter.

OREGON 94, WASHINGTON 83 >> Sabrina Ionescu set an NCAA record with her eighth career triple-double to lead the No. 10 Ducks over the Huskies in Eugene. Ionescu had 24 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists to help Oregon (13-2, 2-0 Pac-12) to its fifth consecutiv­e win. She broke the mark in her 48th career game with an assist on Lexi Bando’s 3-pointer with 1:47 to play. Penn State’s Suzie McConnell and Louella Tomlinson of Saint Mary’s shared the mark with Ionescu.

SOUTH CAROLINA 61, TEXAS A&M 59>> A’ja Wilson scored 25 points, including the go-ahead basket with 1.3 seconds left, as the No. 4 Gamecocks (12-1) rallied from 11 points down in the final 13 minutes to upend the No. 22 Aggies (11-4) to open Southeaste­rn Conference play in Columbia, South Carolina.

The Gamecocks looked like they were finished as the Aggies took a 47-36 lead on Chennedy Carter’s 3-pointer with 2:32 to play in the third quarter. But South Carolina, behind their 6-foot-5 All-American in Wilson, used a 15-2 spurt to go up 51-49.

Men

UCLA 74, WASHINGTON 53 >> Freshman Kris Wilkes scored a careerhigh 21 points, and Aaron Holiday had 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists to the Bruins at Washington’s David Crisp, passes the ball behind UCLA center Thomas Welsh in Sunday’s game.

Pauley Pavilion. UCLA (11-3, 2-0 Pac-12) have won four in a row and snapped Washington’s (11-4, 1-1) four-game win streak. UCLA trailed 43-29 early in the second half but went on a 15-0 run over the next six-plus minutes.

USC 89, WASHINGTON STATE 71 >> Elijah Stewart scored 17 points, and Bennie Boatwright added 13 to lead the Trojans (10-5, 1-1 Pac12) at home.

UTAH 66, OREGON STATE 64 >> Justin Bibbins scored 18 points with four 3-pointers and six assists as the Utes (10-3, 2-0 Pac-12) held on late to beat the Beavers (95, 1-1) in Corvallis, Oregon. The Utes came into the game averaging 8.9 3-pointers made per game. At halftime, they had made 10 of their 11 for the whole game.

KENTUCKY 66, GEORGIA 61 >> Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored five of his 21 points down the stretch, and the No. 16 Wildcats (11-2) held off the visiting Bulldogs (93) in the Southeaste­rn Conference opener for both teams.

SETON HALL 75, ST. JOHN’S 70 >> Khadeen Carrington scored 24 points to help the Pirates (13-2, 2-0 Big East) edge the visiting Red Storm (10-4, 0-2) in Newark, New Jersey. Desi Rodriguez added 23 points and nine rebounds for Seton Hall. St. John’s played without scoring leader Shamorie Ponds. The Big East’s No. 3 scorer at 20.1 points per game, injured his knee Thursday.
