Chryst making a Volunteer move

Keller Chryst, who came to Stanford as a four-star quarterbac­k recruit, announced he is leaving the school for Tennessee as a graduate transfer., according to his Twitter feed and various media reports.

Chryst played in 23 games for Stanford the past three years, 12 of those as a junior in 2016. He was benched in 2017 in favor of K.J. Costello, who will miss spring practice with a hip injury. Chryst will graduate from Stanford in June. He has one year of college eligibilit­y remaining.

According to cbssports.com, Chryst visited Tennessee last week and committed to the Vols on Thursday night.

He will be eligible for the 2018.

First-year coach Jeremy Pruitt is expected to change the team’s offense from the spread formation embraced by former coach Butch Jones to the pro style attack in which Chryst played at Stanford.

BEARS LEAD PAC-12 MEET >> Andrew Seliskar got the Cal men’s team rolling with a win in the 400-yard IM, seniors Justin Lynch (100 butterfly) and Connor Hoppe (100 breaststro­ke) added titles, and the Bears closed night three at the Pac12 championsh­ips in Federal Way, Washington, with an victory in the 400 medley relay to widen their lead in the team standings.

The Bears rank first with 677 points heading into today’s final day of competitio­n, while Stanford is second with 544. USC is third with 411.33.

Baseball

BEARS ROLL IN TEXAS >> Early offense gave Cal (6-2) a lead to defend and the tandem of Jared Horn and Aaron Shortridge did just that as the Bears opened play at the Frisco (Texas) Classic with an 8-2 win over Baylor. Playing the first of three games at Dr. Pepper Ballpark, home of the DoubleA Frisco Rough Riders, Cal (6-2) took the lead with a five-run second and never looked back.

BEARS LOSE 5-1 TO DUKES >> James Madison scored four runs in the seventh inning to beat Cal 5-1 in the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament in Honolulu. The Bears (17-2) are back in action today against East Carolina. Cal scored its only run in third inning on an RBI double from Mikayla Coelho to bring home Lindsay Rood.

STANFORD WINS >> Freshman Carmina Nicolas raced home with the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Hannah Howell in the ninth inning to lift the Cardinal to a 3-2 win over Iowa in the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton.
