City welcomes new chief of police
Mark Duri has served 29 years with San Mateo Sheriff’s Office
Mark M. Duri, a 29-year veteran of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, will be San Carlos’ new top cop.
Duri was expected to step into his new role immediately after being sworn in at the San Carlos City Council Monday. Duri replaces current Chief of Police Gregory P. Rothaus who has been promoted to assistant sheriff for the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
In his 29 years at the sheriff’s office, Duri spent 14 years in supervisory and management roles, mostly in municipal policing operations.
Rothaus — in his new role in the operations division of the sheriff’s office — will oversee all of the sheriff’s office police bureaus including San Carlos. Rothaus leaves after 13 years as chief, highlighted by executing the city’s contract for police services with the sheriff’s office.
“Mark is very excited about this opportunity and I believe he is going to do a great job,” City Manager Jeff Maltbie said of Duri. “Chief Duri’s experience, vision and commitment to both the City of San Carlos and the Sheriff’s Office made him the ideal selection for our Chief’s position.”
“I am truly honored to be selected as police chief for this amazing community,” said Duri in a statement. “It is absolutely the highlight of my career and I am really looking forward to getting started.”
Mayor Bob Grassilli said of Duri’s appointment: “We welcome Chief Duri and look forward to continuing to provide the extremely high quality, cost effective police services our community demands and deserves.”
