Stanford to play USC for water polo championship
Three Cardinal players accounted for the goals, Julia Hermann made 15 saves, and No. 2 Stanford advanced to its ninth consecutive women’s water polo national championship game with an 11-7 semifinal victory over No. 3 Cal on Saturday night in Los Angeles.
Stanford (20-3), which has appeared in every championship match since 2010, will play No. 1 USC (25-1) for the national title today at 3 p.m. The Trojans beat UCLA 10-6 in the tournament’s earlier semifinal. The Cardinal has won six NCAA championships (2002, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2017) and five of the past seven.
Jordan Raney (four goals), Makenzie Fischer (four) and Kat Klass (three) handled the scoring for Stanford. With the win, the Cardinal secured its 14th consecutive 20-win season.
Baseball
OREGON STATE BLANKS CARDINAL >> Second-ranked Stanford was handed a 10-0 defeat at third-ranked Oregon State. The Cardinal (38-8 overall, 17-6 Pac-12) had just four hits. The Beavers (38-7-1, 16-6-1), who scored three in third inning to start the rout, can claim sole possession of first place with a win in today’s series finale. Starter Kris Bubic gave up five runs in 4 1/3 innings. It was the first time Stanford has lost a start by Bubic since April 14, 2017, the Cardinal had won his previous 19 starts.
Track and field
PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIP >> Stanford junior Mackenzie Little earned her third consecutive Pac-12 javelin title and extended a Cardinal winning streak to seven years in that event on the first day of the twoday conference track and field championships held at Stanford. Little threw 180 feet, 1 inch.
• Cal’s Lauren Martinez won the pole vault while setting a school record as she cleared 14-0.
