Six players have won in their first event at No. 1, most recently Dustin Johnson in Mexico last year. … The field features eight of the top 10 in the world. … Thomas, Johnson (No. 2), Justin Rose (No. 3) and Jordan Spieth (No. 5) have a mathematic­al chance of reaching No. 1. … Rose is the only player of that group who has never been No. 1. … Muirfield Village, the course built by Jack Nicklaus, has hosted the Ryder Cup (1987), Solheim Cup (1998) and Presidents Cup (2013). … Rose last week became the fifth player with multiple victories on the PGA Tour this year, joining Thomas, Bubba Watson, Patton Kizzire and Jason Day. … Rose was No. 5 last week, making him the first player from the top 10 to win on the PGA Tour since Justin Thomas (No. 4) at the Honda Classic three months ago.

Notes: The LPGA Tour has not had a multiple winner through 13 tournament­s this year. A year ago, it took until the 16th tournament for a multiple winner. … Karrie Webb received a special exemption. She is the last player to win back-to-back in the U.S. Women’s Open (2000, 2001). … The U.S. Women’s Open is the oldest of the LPGA tournament­s on the schedule, dating to 1946 when Patty Berg won. … The USGA accepted 1,592 entries for the U.S. Women’s Open, the fifth straight year more than 1,500 women applied. … Pernilla Lindberg won the first major of the year at the ANA Inspiratio­n. That made 11 straight women’s majors with a different winner. … This will be the third USGA championsh­ip at Shoal Creek. Buddy Alexander won the 1986 U.S. Amateur and Cameron Peck won the 2008 U.S. Junior. … Shoal Creek also hosted the PGA Championsh­ip in 1984 (Lee Trevino) and 1990 (Wayne Grady). It was in 1990 when the club was criticized for not having black members, which led to the PGA Tour to change its policy on going to courses that didn’t allow minority members.
