Tower of Power celebrates 50th year with 2 Oakland shows

- — Jim Harrington, Staff

It’s another hot week for live music in the Oakland, San Jose and San Francisco areas. Here are some shows worth checking out:

Tower of Power: The mighty East Bay outfit, known for such soulful favorites as “So Very Hard to Go,” “You’re Still a Young Man,” “What Is Hip?” and “Don’t Change Horses (in the Middle of a Stream),” celebrates its 50th anniversary with a two-night stand Friday and Saturday at the Fox Theater in Oakland. Details: 8 p.m.; $59.50-$79.50; www.ticketmaster.com.

Styx and Joan Jett & the Blackhearts: One of the season’s more appealing classic-rock co-headlining tours hits the Concord Pavilion on Friday. As an added bonus, Northern California’s own Tesla is also on the bill. Details: 7 p.m.; $23.75-$149.50; www.livenation.com.

Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers: We know the Doobies are going to be good in concert. The band always makes the grade. But we’re fascinated to see how Steely Dan manages without the great Walter Becker, who died in 2017. The two bands come to the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View on Friday. Details: 7:30 p.m.; $25-$199.50; www. livenation.com.

“Jersey Boys”: The music, life and times of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons are brought to life in this Tony Award-winning musical, which runs Tuesday-June 10 at San Jose’s Center for the Performing Arts. Details: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through June 7, 8 p.m. June 8, 2 and 8 p.m. June 9, 1 and 6:30 p.m. June 10; $43-$203; www.ticketmaster.com

When Doves Cry: The Prince tribute act performs Saturday at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. And we’re willing to bet that the set list will include the band’s namesake. Details: 9 p.m.; $22-$25; www.slimspresents.com.

The Dynamic Miss Faye Carol: The Bay Area blues great, who has shared the stage with such legends as Charles Brown, Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye and Albert King, performs Sunday at the Back Room in Berkeley. She’ll be joined by acclaimed blues guitarist Alvon Johnson. Details: 5 p.m.; $25; backroommusic.com.
