Irene was born on June24, 1928 in Puunene, Maui, Hawaii. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Howard and daughter Diane Baker. She is survived by her children Arleen Frankovich, Annette Bechtol, and John Afflerback, her seven grandchild­ren, and nine great grand children.

She grew up the daughter of a paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) and a housewife who loved her dearly. She went to school at St. Anthony School in Wailuku and then became Postmaster at Sprecklesv­ille, Maui, HI, appointed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. She served 17 years in the Postal Service on Maui and then continued her career in San Jose, CA for another 23 years. She retired in 1984 as Superinten­dent of Window Services after 40 years of service.

She was a member of NAPS 94 and Cabrillo Civic Club #21. She also volunteere­d at O’Connor Hospital, St. Justin’s Parish, and the Pacific Postal Credit Union.

She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmothe­r, and had many friends throughout her long life. She cared about everyone, especially those less fortunate even if it was only to lift someone’s spirit with a kind word.

Visitation will be on Friday, June 29, 2018 at 10:30am with services and burial to follow; at Oak Hill Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 300 Curtner Ave, San Jose, CA. Please wear Hawaiian attire to celebrate Irene’s life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Homes for Our Troops, 6 Main Street, Taunton, MA 02780.
