Stanford’s Manuel wins Honda Cup

- Staff and wire reports

Olympic champion swimmer Simone Manuel of Stanford won the Honda Cup on Monday night for collegiate woman athlete of the year.

It’s the second time Stanford has had back-to-back winners. Katie Ledecky, Manuel’s Olympic and collegiate teammate, won last year. Swimmer Tara Kirk won the award in 2004, followed by volleyball player Ogonna Nnamani the next year.

Manuel, of Sugar Land, Texas, received the trophy at the Galen Center on the USC campus.

She became the first black woman to win an individual Olympic gold medal in swimming at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, where Manuel also won another gold and two silvers.

She finished her collegiate career with six American records and seven NCAA records and was a member of two NCAA championship teams and two Pac-12 Conference title squads. Manuel won 14 NCAA titles over her career, including six at this year’s championships.

In the classroom, Manuel was a two-time Pac-12 Academic honoree and a CoSIDA first-team Academic All-American as a communications major.

The Sharks announced they have issued qualifying offers to pending restricted free agent forwards Chris Tierney and Tomas Hertl, but not to defenseman Dylan DeMelo, who now becomes an unrestricted free agent.

DeMelo, 25, played in 133 games for the Sharks the last three seasons. This past year, DeMelo had a career-high 20 assists in 63 regular season games, averaging 14:12 of ice time per game as he played largely on San Jose’s third defense pair with Brenden Dillon. He also played in all 10 of the Sharks’ playoff games.

DeMelo is coming off a two-year, $1.3 million contract he signed before the 2016-17 season. To qualify DeMelo, the Sharks would have had to offer him a contract that was 105 percent of his 2017-18 base salary of $700,000.

Hertl, 24, figures to be in line for a long-term contract and a significant raise after he completed the final season of a two-year, $6 million deal he signed in June 2016. He had 22 goals this past season, tied for second most on the Sharks, and his 46 points were fourth most on the team. He also had six goals and three assists in 10 playoff games.

Tierney, who turns 24 on July 1, established career highs with 17 goals and 23 assists this past season when he made $700,000, according to capfriendly.com. Like DeMelo, the Sharks’ qualifying offer would have had to have been 105 percent of Tierney’s base salary of $700,000.

Both Hertl and Tierney are arbitration eligible. By issuing qualifying offers to both players, the Sharks can match any offer from another team or receive draftpick compensation.
