Angels’ Scioscia denies report he’ll retire after season

- By The Associated Press

Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia has dismissed a report that he’s stepping down after this season, calling it “just chatter” and “poppycock.”

Scioscia, who has managed the Angels since 2000, said before Sunday’s series finale against the Indians that he won’t talk about his future with the club until the season ends.

Following Saturday’s game, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, citing unnamed sources, reported that Scioscia is expected to step down following his 19th season with the Angels.

The longest-tenured manager in the majors is under contract only through this season. He signed a 10-year contract in 2008.

The 59-year-old says “nothing has changed since we talked in October,” referencing his position that he would not address his situation with ownership until the season is over. MCCULLERS TO DL >> The Houston Astros placed starting pitcher Lance McCullers on the 10-day disabled list Sunday with right elbow discomfort and activated right-handed reliever Roberto Osuna. Osuna was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays in a tradedeadline deal last week and is coming off a 75-day MLB-imposed suspension for violation of the league’s domestic violence policy.

ROSTER MOVES >> The Cardinals claimed right-hander Tyson Ross off waivers from the Padres. The 31-year-old Ross is 6-9 with a 4.45 ERA in 22 starts this season. The last-place Padres could have pulled Ross back from waivers when the Cardinals claimed him, or worked out a trade. But they opted to let him go to St. Louis, saving his salary for the remainder of the season . ... The Brewers announced they claimed righthander Jordan Lyles off waivers from the Padres. The 27-yearold Lyles is 2-4 with a 4.29 ERA this season.
