Reasonable ‘wow’

- By Sharon L. Peters CTW FEATURES

I’ve owned only two cars in my life: a used 1977 Datsun 280Z, and a new 1999 Mazda Miata. I had the first for 17 years, and still have the second. My experience has made me partial to Japanese cars with their excellent workmanship. I love to drive a sporty car with zip and excellent cornering. I believe in buying what you want, taking good care of it, and keeping it until it’s a problem. The Miata is going great, but I’m looking to the future and the purchase of my next vehicle. I’m willing to spend $30,000 or less for a new or used car. The issue is there’s no “wow” factor in the cars I’m seeing. In my price range, they all seem to have similar body styles and the same color palate. Boring! I want style and maneuverability. Please advise.

The “they all look alike” complaint is one I hear from lots of people, whether they’re looking for an SUV, sedan or sporty car. The market offerings at this moment in time do not present many options that meet your parameters, that’s for sure.

I’m wondering if the current Miata is off your list simply because you’ve already had the Miata experience. It obviously performed well for you, and it actually has a great look, not identical to what you have. The colors are sort of blah (or, more fairly, pretty much the same colors every other carmaker is offering) but the soul red is not your typical red.

I also suggest you check out the Fiat Spider. I love the lines — not crazy different, but very nice. And there are a couple of colors being offered for this vehicle that I love: magnetic bronze and “blu scuro,” a luscious deep blue.

The 2018s of each vehicle are in the $30,000 range. But since your car is still holding up, you’ll be able to get a 1-year-old version that’s well within your budget even if fully loaded. You can also check out the Subaru BRZ. It doesn’t exactly fit your parameters (and again, the colors are boring), but it’s within your price range and getting good reviews.

Readers: have any other suggestions?
