Sueing, Austin lead Cal rally

Bears make up a seven-point deficit late to beat San Diego State

Justice Sueing scored a seasonhigh 23 points, Paris Austin added 15, and Cal rallied to defeat San Diego State 89-83 on Saturday night at Haas Pavilion.

The Bears (3-5) ended a two-game slide and beat San Diego State (5-4) for the second straight time. Grant Anticevich had 13 points and six rebounds, both career highs, for Cal. It was 68-all with 7:52 to play, but the Aztecs went on a 10-3 run to build a 78-71 lead with 3:57 left. But Cal roared back to build an 83-80 edge with 1:11 left as Austin hit a 3-point shot and Andre Kelly scored from inside.

San Diego State tied it 83-83 on Schakel’s 3-pointer with 45.5 seconds left, but Matt Bradley drilled a 3 with 25 seconds left, putting Cal up 86-83. Cal made a season-high 13 3-pointers. NO. 2 KANSAS 63, NEW MEXICO STATE 60 >> Dedric Lawson had 20 points and 10 rebounds, and the Jayhawks (8-0) stalled without injured center Udoka Azubuike. The Aggies (7-2) had a chance to tie it on a 3-pointer with 6 seconds to go, but JoJo Zamora’s attempt bounced off the rim and they didn’t get another look in the Jayhawk Shootout played in Kansas City, Missouri.

NO. 5 MICHIGAN 89, SOUTH CAROLINA 78 >> Jordan Poole scored 19 of his 26 points in the second half, and the host Wolverines (10-0) remained unbeaten. The Gamecocks (4-5) scored more points than any team all season against Michigan. Chris Silva led South Carolina with 18.

SETON HALL 84, NO. 9 KENTUCKY 83>> Myles Cale hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 9.5 seconds left in overtime, and the Pirates (6-3) overcame Keldon Johnson’s half-court heave that tied the score at the regulation buzzer in the game played at New York’s Madison Square Garden. In one of the most exciting finishes of the season, Johnson had a chance to win it for the Wildcats (7-2), but his 3-point try with a second remaining was blocked by Quincy McKnight. Seton Hall players celebrate after stunning ninth-ranked Kentucky 84-83 in overtime.

Myles Powell scored 25 of his 28 points after halftime for Seton Hall, including a tiebreakin­g 3 in the final seconds of the second half. MARQUETTE 74, NO. 12 WISCONSIN 69 >> Markus Howard scored 27 points, freshman Joey Hauser added 15, and the Golden Eagles (8-2) grinded out the overtime win in Milwaukee. Wisconsin (8-2) wasted a terrific effort from Ethan Happ, who had 34 points and 11 rebounds.

NO. 17 BUFFALO 80, ST. BONAVENTUR­E 62 >> Jayvon Graves hit a career-best five 3-pointers and scored 19 points, helping the unbeaten Bison (9-0) to the win in Olean, New York. The Bonnies (4-6) had won three in a row. NO. 25 FURMAN 74, SOUTH CAROLINA UPSTATE 60 >> Jordan Lyons had 20 points, and Noah Gurley added 15 points and six rebounds, powering the unbeaten Paladins (10-0) to the win. The surprise of the season, Furman got through the program’s first-ever week in the AP Top 25 unscathed.

UCLA 65, NOTRE DAME 62 >> Kris Wilkes hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 0.1 seconds remaining, lifting the host Bruins (7-2) over the Irish after blowing a 14-point lead. Jalen Hill blocked a layup by Prentiss Hubb, Prince Ali grabbed the defensive rebound and fed Wilkes, who staggered backward as he hit the game-winner in the first meeting between the longtime rivals since 2009.

ILLINOIS 77, UNLV 74 >> Andres Feliz scored 19 points, and Kipper Nichols added 12 as the host Illini (3-7) snapped a three-game skid. UNLV (4-4) was held to 34 percent shooting from the field (23 of 68).

BYU 74, UTAH 59 >> Yoeli Childs made his first five shots and scored 31 points and collected 11 rebounds to lead the Cougars (7-4) in Salt Lake City. Sedrick Barefield scored 16 points, and Timmy Allen added 13 for the Utes (4-4).

SYRACUSE 72, GEORGETOWN 71 >> Tyus Battle scored 21 of his game-high 26 points in the second half, including the game winner with three seconds to go, and the host Orange (7-2) overcame a 15-point deficit to defeat its longtime rival for its fifth win in a row. Jessie Govan led the Hoyas (72), who led 37-22 at one point, with 22 points.

FRESNO STATE 92, LONG BEACH STATE 71 >> Noah Blackwell scored 22 points, Nate Grimes scored 15 points with 14 rebounds, and the host Bulldogs (7-2) are on a five-game winning streak averaging 79.8 points per game. OREGON 84, OMAHA 61 >> Kenny Wooten scored a career-high 20 points, and Bol Bol had 18 points and 10 rebounds as the host Ducks (5-3) snapped a two-game losing streak.

Women

NO. 13 CAL 81, SAINT MARY’S 78 >> Kristine Anigwe had 24 points and 12 rebounds, and Recee Caldwell scored 20 points, including two free throws with 27 seconds left in overtime as the Bears (8-0) edged the Gaels (53) at McKeon Pavilion. Anigwe has double-doubles in all eight of Cal’s games.

Emily Codding scored a career high 26 points with four 3-pointers to lead Saint Mary’s, and Sydney Raggio added 13 points and 17 rebounds. NEBRASKA 96, SAN JOSE STATE 63 >> Cydni Lewis led the Spartans (1-7) with 15 points and nine rebounds in the road loss, and Analyss Benally scored 14. Nebraska (4-5) outscored San Jose State 34-14 in the fourth quarter to cruise to the win.
