Coffee brews up Cardinal upset

Alanna Smith had 21 points and eight rebounds, Shannon Coffee made a critical 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter and the No. 11 Stanford women held on to beat previously undefeated No. 3 Baylor 68-63 on Saturday at Maples Pavilion.

Kiana Williams had 13 points and five assists, DiJonai Carrington scored 10 points, and the Cardinal (71) ended the Bears’ 36-game winning streak in the regular season.

The 6-foot-5 Coffee set season highs with nine points and 19 minutes.

“Shannon’s been someone that has been a role player for our team and a lot of times she’s led the cheers on the bench,” Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. “Today people were cheering for her. She made some big shots. Her defense was really good. It was really exciting for her to have such a big game in a big game.”

Coffee entered the day averaging fewer than five minutes per game, but she was pressed into extended duty to try to contain Brown and Baylor’s inside game.

NaLyssa Smith and Chloe Jackson had 15 points apiece for Baylor (8-1). The Bears have defeated two Top 25 teams on the road this season but couldn’t overcome 15 turnovers against the Cardinal.

Stanford led comfortabl­y through three quarters and was up 60-44 early in the fourth, then held off Baylor’s best run of the game.

STANFORD WINS NATIONAL TITLE >> Top-seeded Stanford (34-1) won an NCAArecord eighth national volleyball championsh­ip, with Kathryn Plummer finishing with 19 kills and 10 digs, and Holly Campbell adding 15 kills for the Cardinal in a five-set victory over defending champion Nebraska in Minneapoli­s. Morgan Hentz had 32 digs for Stanford, which won 28-26, 22-25, 2516, 15-25, 15-12.

ARIZA LANDS WITH WIZARDS >> The Wizards are getting Trevor Ariza after all. Washington agreed in principle to acquire Ariza from the Phoenix Suns for Kelly Oubre Jr. and Austin Rivers, according to a person familiar with the deal. This Ariza trade came together hours after a potential three-way deal involving the Memphis Grizzlies fell apart late Friday night. Ariza played for the Wizards in the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons.

FRESNO STATE TOPS ASU IN LAS VEGAS >> Ronnie Rivers rushed for 212 yards and two touchdowns, Anthoula “Tank” Kelly had a 70-yard intercepti­on return for a touchdown, and No. 19 Fresno State beat Arizona State 31-20 in the Las Vegas Bowl. Marcus McMaryion rushed for a touchdown and was 15-of-29 passing for 176 yards to help the Bulldogs (12-2), Mountain West champions, set a school record for wins in a season.

Eno Benjamin rushed for 118 yards a one touchdown for the Sun Devils (7-6) in their third straight bowl loss.

UTAH STATE ROLLS IN NEW MEXICO BOWL >> Jordan Love threw for 359 yards and four touchdowns, and Jalen Greene had six catches for 151 yards and a score to help Utah State rout North Texas 52-13 in the New Mexico Bowl in Albuquerqu­e. Interim coach Frank Maile directed the Aggies (11-2) after Matt Wells left to take the Texas Tech job. Love completed 21 of 43 passes with one intercepti­on. D.J. William had two intercepti­ons, helping Utah State ground high-flying North Texas (9-4).

Men’s college basketball

NORTH CAROLINA RUNS PAST GONZAGA >> Cameron Johnson had 25 points and six 3-pointers while No. 12 North Carolina (8-2) shot 55 percent to beat fourthrank­ed Gonzaga 103-90 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The Zags (9-2), who sat at No. 1 a week ago, have lost to No. 3 Tennessee and now the Tar Heels. Zach Norvell Jr. scored 21 points to lead the Bulldogs.

CAL SLIPS PAST CAL POLY >> Paris Austin made a 15foot jumper with 3.8 seconds left, and Cal overcame a late shooting slump to beat Cal Poly 67-66 at Haas Pavilion. Justice Sueing finished with 15 points and seven rebounds as the Bears (4-5) won consecutiv­e games for the first time this season.

STANFORD PULLS AWAY

FROM EASTERN WASHINGTON >> Daejon Davis scored 19 points, one of four to reach double figures, and host Stanford beat Eastern Washington 78-62. Cormac Ryan scored 12 points, all on three pointers, for the Cardinal (5-4), which avenged last year’s loss to the Eagles (1-8).

INDIANA HEAVE STUNS BUTLER >> Rob Phinisee hit a deep, buzzer-beating 3-pointer, and Juwan Morgan scored a career-high 35 points to give No. 25 Indiana a 71-68 victory over Butler in the Crossroads Classic in Indianapol­is. The Hoosiers (9-2) barely won their fourth straight, scrambling to get a shot before time ran out.

RED SOX OWE LUXURY TAX PENALTY >> INDIANS SEND ALONSO TO WHITE SOX >> The Cleveland Indians made another offseason move, trading first baseman Yonder Alonso to the Chicago White Sox. Cleveland gets 24-year-old outfielder Alex Call in a deal made official Saturday. Call has yet to make his major league debut. The Indians also rid themselves of Alonso’s entire $8 million salary for 2019.

ADAMS BACK WITH NATIONALS >> Free agent first baseman Matt Adams has an agreement to return to the Washington Nationals. Adams and the Nationals reportedly have agreed to a $4 million, one-year deal.
