RICHMOND >> A suspect is in custody after a neighbor armed with a knife and Richmond police officers intervened in an attempted murder and home invasion, according to police.

Three officers responded to a call on Dec. 30 at 4:07 a.m. of an assault with a deadly weapon and home invasion in the 200 block of Marina Lakes Drive, according to a Facebook post by Richmond police late Saturday morning.

The suspect, described only as male, entered a home and threatened to stab two of the residents with a knife, according to Lt. Matt Stonebreaker of the Richmond Police Department. The residents were able to get away relatively unharmed, he said, and asked a nearby homeowner for help.

The homeowner, armed with a knife, confronted the suspect and stabbed him in self-defense, Stonebreaker said.

It was at that point that police arrived, and after a struggle with officers, the suspect was taken into custody and charged with attempted murder, robbery home invasion, assault with a deadly weapon and criminal threats.

Richmond police posted photos showing blood smeared and dripping down a stairway and pooled on the steps, and overturned furniture inside the home.

The suspect’s name will not be released until formal charges are filed, according to police. Additional details were not provided about the suspect’s motive or whether he knew the victims.
