A new year, a new milestone?
Employees who want to excel seem to keep an internal checklist of what they value and aim to accomplish. The tough part — for most people — is turning those goals into actions. The key element is creating a plan to present your case.
Some points to consider: Do you think your co-workers and managers are talented? Are you willing to jumpstart the momentum? Do you believe someone will listen?
Oh, and there’s one other question: Are there 35 or more people working at your place of employment? If so, then now is the time to approach a manager or peer and nominate your employer as a 2019 Top Workplace at www.mercurynews.com/nominate. It is a simple process, it’s free, and it can prove to your boss that you see not only what your company is, but what it can be. In other words, you are a visionary.
Now that you know the process is simple, be aware that the deadline is fast approaching — it’s January 11. So before meetings on goals, new projects or annual updates fill your schedule, check out the website or call the number below to start the process. Have a great 2019!
Previous Top Workplaces discuss the benefits Kids’ Country
“Being named a Top Workplace in the Bay Area is an honor for us at Kids’ Country. While the “title,” the trophy, and the marketing power is really great, what is most rewarding is knowing that our staff feels appreciated and supported. Winning this award means that our conscious efforts to create an engaging and rewarding workplace have been effective. Our industry (education/ youth services) is not typically seen on lists such as this because we do not have the resources and ability to compensate our hardworking staff what they are really worth. How can we compare to some larger organizations with unlimited resources?!? Despite this challenge, our staff feels as though we deserve to be on this list and that is incredible. The culture of Kids’ Country has changed drastically over the last few years from a place where individual opinions reigned to a place where the betterment of the whole is most important. Listening to staff needs and responding to feedback is our norm. As a result of these changes, not only do we have happy staff, we have happy children and happy parents. The number of children we have served grows each year and that is a direct result of our staff ’s hard work and passion toward serving our community and our children. I am humbled to be able to lead this amazing group of professionals!
“Working at a Top Workplace means employees are excited about going to work every day. Knowing that you are valued, have an impact and are helping your organization achieve its goals is very meaningful. So … YES, the environment is better! Our ability to recruit and retain staff is also better because of the culture of collaboration and shared purpose. Many of our employees are referred by existing staff who have shared our story.”
Service Champions HVAC
“Service Champions Heating & Air Conditioning — a residential heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and home comfort services contractor — is once again named on the Bay Area News Group’s 2018 Top Workplaces list. This marks the third consecutive year for Service Champions to be recognized with this distinguished award, based on an annual survey of Bay Area-company employees. The survey asked workers to rate their employers in categories such as leadership and direction, ethics and values, and how well employees are treated.
“Based on the results, it’s clear that Service Champion employees choose jobs and remain here for more than just a paycheck. ‘I am very proud that Service Champions has been named a Top Workplace, and honored that our employees value our culture and growth opportunities,’ says Kevin Comerford, Service Champions’ CEO and founder. ‘Our core purpose has always been to “Inspire and Aspire” by building a wildly successful, high-performance team and business while offering our team members abundant opportunities to grow.’
“Being recognized as a Top Workplace in the Bay Area has given us the opportunity to recruit and retain high-level team members as we bring recognition to this prestigious award during the interview process. We also share this award during our All TEAM meetings allowing for our team members to take pause and realize they are working for a pretty great company where employees are proud to work at. For Service Champions, it’s a true honor to be nominated but an even greater sense of acknowledgment from our team.”
Stryker Endoscopy & Stryker Neurovascular
“Participating in the Top Workplaces recognition program supports positive brand recognition in the Bay Area. This honor speaks to what makes us special — our people! We are honored to work with great people who are driven, hardworking and want to win together as a team. They live our mission and values every day, and they are the reason that Stryker is one of the Top Workplaces in the Bay Area.”
Globalstar
“Competing and retaining top talents in
the Bay Area is more challenging than anywhere in the country. We work very hard to shape the culture to provide an open environment where employees are well informed on important decisions. Everyone is encouraged to participate in different projects that can fully utilize their potential. This award is recognition of our effort to build a strong team. Being named as one of the Top Workplaces will definitely help us to continue our effort to attract and retain top talents.”

Energage, our Top Workplaces research partner, will conduct the employee surveys. They have surveyed more than 2.8 million employees at nearly 7,000 organizations last year alone. Energage, based in Exton, Pennsylvania, conducts this survey in partnership with Bay Area News Group. The Top Workplaces list is entirely based on employee feedback through the survey process. Last year, the survey generated responses from more than 16,000 employees in the Bay Area.
Employees are asked 24 questions, and the employer may add five more. The questions measure employee opinions in the areas of engagement, organizational health and satisfaction. The identity of employees is kept anonymous. When the results are complete, each participating company receives a free summary report.
