Calixto Erlano Ereno
August 14, 1925 - December 30, 2018 Resident of San Jose
Calixto Erlano Ereno (Cal) at the age of 93, passed this life peacefully on December 30, 2018 in Sunnyvale, CA surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was born in Santa Ana, Gubat, Sorsogon, Philippines to Juan Ereno and Inocencia Erlano. He came from humble beginnings and his childhood dream was to one day come to America. Cal joined the United States Armed Forces in the Far East as a Guerilla and was assigned to an elite security unit. After his enlistment, he met his wife (Tessie) at Adamson University. In 1952 Cal volunteered in the Korean War with the Philippine Expeditionary Forces and was awarded the Philippine Merit medal. Cal’s dream of coming to America was realized in 1960 when he and his family migrated to the US. From that year forward, Cal’s drive, persistence and determination kept him busy in multiple roles including community affairs. He was a member of The American Legion and Knights of Columbus, an officer of The Sorsogon Assoc. and Maharalika Lions Club, and was the first president of the Bicol National Assoc. of America (BNAA). He was one of the founders of the Devotee of Our Lady Virgin of Penafrancia. Cal was a member of the postal EEO and helped to organize the Fil-Am Postal Employees Assoc. of Santa Clara Co. He retired after working 21 years at the US Postal Service. Cal earned recognitions as a Melvin Jones Fellow and the Helen Keller Fellow. After retirement, he remained active and was elected as the 3rd national president of the BNAA. His passions included travelling around the world, fishing, gardening, cooking, the love of learning, and storytelling. When Tessie retired in 2001, they visited Gubat where Cal was elected Hermano Mayor in the parish of St. Anthony of Padua. He was also Hermano of The Holy Family Chapel of the Barrio of Sta. Ana which he helped to rebuild. He assisted in a fundraising drive to construct the Chapel of the Holy Redeemer and build a road that connected to the national highway which was named in his honor.
Cal is survived by his son William (Maribel), daughters Evangeline (Donald), Jennifer, Josephine (Dean), Grace, Carole (Joseph), Edith (Michael), Mary Rose (Richard) and Lisa (Bruce), 19 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, his brother Julian and many members of his extended family. Cal will be remembered for his love and zest for life, his gift of gab, laughter, and his ability to bring people together. The “Source” will forever be remembered in our hearts.
Viewing at Chapel of the Oaks, Oak Hill Cemetery, 300 Curtner Ave., San Jose, Monday January 14th 9am – 9 pm, Rosary at 6 pm. Funeral Mass on Tuesday January 15th at 11 am, St. Lucy Parish, 2350 Winchester Blvd., Campbell followed by entombment at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, 490 Lincoln Street, Santa Clara. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The American Diabetes Assoc., Second Harvest Food Bank or charity of your choice.
