Suspect arrested in pair of Palo Alto auto burglaries

Detectives are investigat­ing whether 18-yearold Daly City man is responsibl­e for other break-ins

PALO ALTO >> An 18-year-old Daly City man has been arrested in connection with a pair of auto burglaries in Palo Alto, authoritie­s said.

Luis Garcia was taken into custody just before 9 p.m. Feb. 1, an hour and a half after he was seen breaking into a car at a public parking garage in Palo Alto, according to police.

About 7:30 p.m., a Palo Alto police officer allegedly spotted Garcia using a flashlight to peer into vehicles at the garage on the 500 block of High Street. The officer recognized Garcia as a suspect in a Dec. 17 auto burglary on the 400 block of Bryant Street.

Police said Garcia then smashed a window of a vehicle, grabbed a purse and jumped into a silver 2003 Audi convertibl­e. Other officers who were called to the scene tried to stop Garcia, but he allegedly ignored their commands and sped away from the garage.

Daly City police later found Garcia in the Audi at East Market Street and Hillside Boulevard in Daly City.

Garcia was booked into Santa Clara County jail on felony charges of auto burglary and committing a crime while out on bail and misdemeano­r charges of resisting arrest and driving without a license.

Detectives are investigat­ing whether Garcia is responsibl­e for other auto burglaries in Palo Alto.
