PACIFICA >> All lanes on Highway 1 were reopened after a fatal collision early Saturday morning when a wrong-way driver in a Toyota Prius collided headon with a Chevy Silverado truck, resulting in two deaths and one person in critical condition.

The California Highway Patrol received a call at 4:13 a.m. reporting a wrong-way driver traveling south in the northbound lanes of Highway 1. Five minutes later, CHP received a report of a head-on collision between a Chevy Silverado, traveling north, and a Toyota Prius, which was traveling south in the wrong lane, CHP Public Information Officer Bert Diaz said.

The two passengers of the Prius, a man and woman between 20 and 30 years old, were pronounced dead at the scene. The man, who was sitting in the backseat, was ejected from the car and may not have been wearing a seatbelt, Diaz said.

The car’s driver was transported to San Francisco General Hospital with major injuries and is in critical condition, according to CHP.

The two men in the Chevy Silverado, also between 20 and 30 years old, were transported to the hospital, but their injuries are non-life-threatening, Diaz said.

All northbound lanes were closed for several hours while authorities cleaned up the wreck. The highway reopened at about 9:30 a.m.
