Former Arizona coach Olson recovering from weekend stroke

Legendary former Ari- zona basketball coach Lute Olson is hospitaliz­ed in Tucson, Ariz., after suffering a minor stroke over the weekend, the university announced Monday.

The 84-year-old Olson was admitted to Banner-University Medical Center on Saturday.

“He is likely to make a full recovery but will likely need some rehabilita­tion therapy after his discharge from the hospital,” David Labiner, M.D., chairman of the department of neurology, said in a statement released by the medical center.

Olson coached Arizona from 1983-2007 and compiled a 589-187 record. His teams made 23 consecutiv­e NCAA Tournament appearance­s and won the 1997 national title.

Olson was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002.

DUKE BACK AT NO. 1 >> Tennessee’s loss to Kentucky sent the top-ranked Volunteers plummeting to No. 5 in the AP Top 25 poll and allowed Duke to return to No. 1.

Duke captured 58 of the 64 first-place votes in balloting. No. 2 Gonzaga, which moved up one spot, received the other six. Also moving up one place were No. 3 Virginia and No. 4 Kentucky.

Tennessee had spent four weeks atop the poll.

Rounding out the Top 10 were Nevada, Michigan, North Carolina, Houston and Michigan State.

Making the biggest jump was LSU, which toppled Kentucky and Georgia to climb six spots to No. 13. MSU’S WARD OUT >> Michigan State forward Nick Ward is out indefinite­ly with a hairline fracture of his left hand, according to multiple reports. He suffered the injury Sunday in the Spartans’ 62-44 win over Ohio State.

A junior, Ward has been a key contributo­r for 21-5 Michigan State.

He is second on the team in scoring at an average of 15.1 points per game and third in rebounding (6.7). Michigan State plays host to Rutgers on Wednesday and is at No. 7 Michigan on Sunday.

FLACCO DEAL TO BRONCOS NEARLY COMPLETE >> Quarterbac­k Joe Flacco has passed his physical with the Denver Broncos, Sports Illustrate­d reported. That means Denver’s trade for Flacco, who has spent his entire 11-year career with Baltimore, can be completed when the new league year starts on March 13.

Denver is set to send a fourth-round draft pick to Baltimore.

Flacco, 34, was the MVP of Super Bowl XLVII in 2013 and was the Ravens’ starter from 2008 until a hip injury he suffered last season. Rookie first-round pick Lamar Jackson took over for Flacco in Week 9 and didn’t relinquish the starting role. ROSEN UNHARMED IN ACCIDENT >> Arizona Cardinals quarterbac­k Josh Rosen was not injured in a car crash in Los Angeles this past weekend, even showing that he had a good sense of humor about the entire incident.

The accident happened Saturday, according to a post on the Cardinals team website. Rosen posted two photos of his damaged Tesla to his verified Instagram account @josh3rosen, including one that was arranged to where the damage to the right rear door appears as if it was caused by a super-hero style punch. He even remarks on his pretend super-hero strength saying: “Dude, I’m telling you the NFL doesn’t test for this stuff”

EX-SOONER STAR BROWN TO MISS COMBINE >> Oklahoma WR Marquise Brown underwent surgery for a LisFranc injury in January and will be sidelined for the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapol­is later this month, according to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Brown, who is projected by most analysts as a firstround pick, also will be sidelined for his Pro Day but is expected to be ready for training camp, according to the report.

The 5-foot-10, 168-pound Brown caught 132 passes for 2,413 yards and 17 touchdowns in 25 games over two seasons for the Sooners, averaging 18.3 yards per reception.

COWBOYS CUTTING WILLIAMS LOOSE >> The Dallas Cowboys have elected to take a pass on wide receiver Terrance Williams and declined his 2019 contract option, a move that will make the speedy play maker a free agent in March, multiple outlets reported.

In six seasons, all with the Cowboys, the 29-yearold Williams has 232 receptions for 3,377 yards and 20 touchdowns.

SERENA BACK IN TOP 10 >> Serena Williams has made her way back to the Top 10 in the WTA rankings for the first time since the birth of her daughter in September 2017, landing at No. 10 this week.

Japan’s Naomi Osaka remained No. 1. Simona Halep of Romania and Sloane Stephens each moved up a spot to Nos. 2 and 3, respective­ly.

Williams, 37, first appeared in the Top 10 on April 5, 1999. This is her 793rd career week in the Top 10.

QUALIFIER OUSTS DEFENDING CHAMP MERTENS >> Qatar Open champion Elise Mertens was upset 5-7 6-4 7-5 by qualifier Zhu Lin after a battle lasting nearly three hours in the first round of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championsh­ips.

U.S. qualifier Jennifer Brady beat former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 6-4 6-0.

But the biggest name to exit the tournament bowed out without playing a shot. Caroline Wozniacki, the ninth seed, withdrew just before her opener after failing to shake off the virus that kept her out of the Qatar Open last week.

KNICKS NOT FOR SALE >> The New York Knicks’ parent company said that a report of chairman James Dolan taking offers to sell the team is “100 percent false.”

“There has been nothing. No discussion­s. No plans to have discussion­s — nothing,” the Madison Square Garden Company said in a statement.

The topic, which also came up late last year, arose again on Sunday in a podcast from The Ringer. Host Bill Simmons said, “Multiple people told me this, who know things: James Dolan is courting offers for the Knicks. It’s happening. It’s on. It’s go time. He’s courting offers for the Knicks.”

WILLIAMS TEAM SLOW TO START >> Williams are set to miss at least the first two days of Formula One’s opening pre-season test after failing to get their new car ready in time. The former world champions said on Monday, as cars from the other nine teams lapped Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya, that they were unlikely to get on track until the third day.
