Redwood City man convicted in beating death of toddler
A Redwood City man was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter this week in the killing of his girlfriend’s 18-month-old son in 2014, prosecutors said.
A San Mateo jury found Marco Antonio AlvaradoCisneros, 27, guilty of involuntary manslaughter and felony assault of a child resulting in death on Monday, after a multi-week trial, according to the District Attorney’s Office. He was acquitted on a murder charge.
Prosecutors said Alvarado-Cisneros’ 21-yearold girlfriend had left the toddler, Dante Nava, with him at their home when she went to work on the afternoon of Aug. 12, 2014.
Several hours later, Alvarado-Cisneros called 911 saying Nava was not breathing, and told paramedics he believed the boy had fallen off the bed, authorities said. Nava died shortly afterward.
But an autopsy found that the boy had “numerous injuries,” prosecutors said, among them a “massive subdural hematoma,” bruises and bite marks.
The boy’s mother later told police that AlvaradoCisneros had abused, kidnapped and robbed her, authorities said.
Prosecutors charged him with murder, but after deliberating for three days, jurors on Monday found him not guilty on the murder charge.
Alvarado-Cisneros will receive a mandatory sentence of 25 years to life in prison as a result of the felony assault conviction, said Assistant District Attorney Sean Gallagher.
He will face up to another 14 years in prison when he is sentenced in June for a slate of domestic violence-related charges he pleaded guilty to just before his trial started last month, Gallagher said.
