BELMONT >> Police Chief Dan DeSmidt, who spent more than three decades working in law enforcement, will retire on July 13, city officials announced Wednesday.

DeSmidt spent his entire career working for the Belmont Police Department, including the past seven years as police chief. A graduate of Carlmont High School in Belmont, DeSmidt was first hired by the police department in 1987 as a community service officer.

“It’s been my honor to serve my hometown since 1987,” DeSmidt said in a statement released by the city. “The City and the Police Department are in great hands. I’m confident that those I leave behind are well prepared for any challenges that lie ahead.”

DeSmidt, who holds advanced degrees from Notre Dame de Namur University and Cal State East Bay, is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy. During his time in Belmont, DeSmidt held several board appointments, including the League of California Cities, California Police Chiefs Association, San Mateo County Narcotics and Vehicle Theft Task Forces, and others.

“Dan brought stability to the department when it was needed,” City Manager Greg Scoles said in a statement. “His approach to leadership, open communication style and commitment to the community has earned him the respect and admiration of not only his staff, colleagues and City Council but also the community.

“He will be greatly missed,” Scoles said.

DeSmidt plans on continuing to serve an assistant baseball coach at the College of San Mateo.

Scoles will determine when and how to fill the vacancy created by DeSmidt’s retirement, according to the press release.
