Diamondbacks’ Peralta out with shoulder injury

-

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed left fielder David Peralta on the 10-day injured list with an injured right shoulder.

Peralta is leading Arizona in batting with a .309 average with seven home runs, 16 doubles and 30 RBIs this season. He is the second key hitter placed on the IL this week for the Diamondbacks. Infielder Wilmer Flores was sidelined earlier this week with a broken right foot.

The Diamondbacks called up first baseman Kevin Cron from Triple-A Reno on Friday.

Cron was batting .339 with 21 homers and 62 RBIs for Reno this season.

Kemp, Santana agree to minor deals

Looking to replenish their depth, the bangedup New York Mets agreed to minor league contracts with veteran outfielder Matt Kemp and pitcher Ervin Santana.

Both players are expected to report to the club’s spring training complex in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

The 34-year-old Kemp, who made his third All-Star team last season with the Dodgers, was released May 4 by Cincinnati. He hit .200 with a homer and five RBIs for the Reds and had been sidelined since April 23 with a broken left rib.

The 36-year-old Santana, a two-time All-Star, became a free agent on April 29, three days after he was designated for assignment by the White Sox, who signed him for a $4.3 million salary this year. He was 0-2 with a 9.45 ERA in three starts for Chicago this season.

New York has 11 players on the injured list, including four outfielders and five pitchers.

Missing from the outfield are regulars Michael Conforto (concussion), Brandon Nimmo (stiff neck) and Jeff McNeil (left hamstring tightness). Longtime big leaguers Carlos Gomez and Rajai Davis were called up from Triple-A Syracuse within the past week to help fill those holes. New York also claimed outfielder Aaron Altherr off waivers from the Giants.

Jays start sons of Hall of Fame dads

The Toronto Blue Jays became the first team to start two players with Hall of Fame fathers after calling up Cavan Biggio, son of Craig, for his big league debut Friday night against the San Diego Padres. Biggio started at second and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was at third.

Biggio, who went 0 for 3 on Friday, was hitting .307 with six homers and 26 RBIs in 42 games at Triple-A Buffalo.

Another top minor league prospect for the Blue Jays is Bo Bichette, whose father Dante played in the majors.

Brewers’ Nelson off injured list

Encouraged by his progress, the Milwaukee Brewers activated pitcher Jimmy Nelson off the injured list and put him at Triple-A San Antonio.

The 29-year-old right-hander hasn’t pitched in the major leagues since September 2017. He was enjoying his best season when he injured his pitching shoulder diving back into first base after a base hit.

Nelson missed the entire 2018 season. He has made four rehab appearances this month, including three starts, in Triple-A and gone 2-0 with a 4.74 ERA. He struck out 22 and walked nine in 19 innings.

“We decided to option him and it’s really for him to just continue to get back to where we think he can get to,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. “We think he’s making good progress.”

Nelson was 12-6 with a 3.49 ERA in 29 starts, with 199 strikeouts in 175 1/3 innings, for the Brewers in 2017 when he was hurt.
