Ten years after a violent home invasion in Marina left one victim with a fractured skull, a 51-yearold man from Huntington Beach has been convicted for his role in the event, Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced Friday.

After a seven-day trial, Sean Patrick Melody was convicted of two counts of kidnapping for extortion, three counts of grand theft of a firearm and one count of grand theft of personal property, according to the district attorney’s office.

On May 21, 2009, Melody and an accomplice went to their intended victim’s home, forced their way into the house at gunpoint and took the victim’s roommate hostage, according to the DA’s ofice.

When the intended victim and a friend arrived home, Melody and his accomplice held the men at gunpoint, bound them and beat them with baseball bats, leaving one of them with a fractured skull, the DA’s office said.

Melody then forced the intended victim to open his safe by pointing a handgun at him and threatening to kill the other victims if he did not comply.

Melody was arrested in October 2012 but was held in Orange County on charges connected to a separate residential robbery that took place in December 2007.

He was convicted of the Orange County case in 2017 and was then brought to Monterey County to face charges for the Marina home invasion, the DA’s office said.

Melody’s accomplice in the Marina home invasion, Brian Zumbado, was arrested in 2012 and was sentenced to prison in 2013.
