A 54-year-old San Jose man was killed in a traffic crash on northbound Highway 101 just past Mckee Road in San Jose early Saturday.

Two vehicles, a Chevrolet Cobalt driven by the victim and a late 1990s Mercedes SUV, were traveling north about 3:35 a.m. on the freeway when the Cobalt suddenly swerved left, cutting across several lanes, said Officer Ross Lee with the California Highway Patrol.

The Mercedes, driven by a 47-year-old San Jose man, hit the Cobalt on its left rear corner, then the Cobalt kept going and crashed into the guardrail. The Cobalt then went back across all lanes and came to a stop on the shoulder of the highway.

“The driver of the SUV temporarily lost control and spun out, and then rebounded to the right shoulder in front of the Cobalt,” Lee said.

The driver of the SUV found the driver of the Cobalt injured and bleeding from his face. The injured driver was taken to a hospital, where he died, the officer said.

The driver of the SUV did not need to be taken to a hospital for medical attention, according to authorities.

The crah is under investigation, and there is no information on whether drugs or alcohol were involved. CHP closed one lane of traffic for about an hour and 15 minutes, reopening it before 5 a.m.
