Ronald Haas (of the Levi Strauss family fame) was a 27-year-old architecture student at UC Berkeley when he spent almost two years designing this home cantilevered on an Aptos hillside.

An enchanting and romantic hideaway, weekend retreat, or adult treehouse, Haas technically described it as “two triangles joined base to base”. It is indeed an architectural masterpiece that takes advantage of space and natural light where nothing interferes with views of the ocean and surrounding natural terrain. It is truly one of the most unique homes available in Santa Cruz County.

Engineered by the former Santa Cruz City Engineer Alex Russell, this home at 137 Las Lomas Drive in Aptos was completed in 1964. It has been subsequently updated on the interior while retaining its serenity of space and privacy in addition to its original design and features including copper panels with a rich patina, and rosewood, black walnut, ash, ribbon grain mahogany and cedar woods.

Formerly owner occupied as a primary dwelling, the property is currently a proven incoming-producing property with roughly 80 percent occupancy rate as an Airbnb. It is one of less than a dozen homes on the quiet private road.

The 1,250 square-foot home sits on 1.38 acres and features two levels of living space. A bridge suspends from the off-street parking spaces to the gorgeous front door handmade from local redwood.

The eye-catching and inspiring views are framed by the floor-to-ceiling walls of windows and create the feeling of being suspended among the redwoods with a birds-eye view. Three decks jettison off the main level offering distinct outdoor spaces: “One for sun, one for shade, and one for dining,” according to Haas.

Nothing interferes with the views from the open floor plan on the main level that features a vaulted ceiling with the supporting beams incorporated into the interior design, skylights, bamboo floors, and a living and dining area. Counter-high appliances are uniquely featured in the kitchen where there are granite counters and breakfast bar, a hammered copper sink, and GE Profile appliances. Radiant heated floors, a Nest thermostat, updated electrical wiring, recessed lighting, and a keyless entry have also been added creating a turnkey property.

An artistically designed staircase connects to the lower level where there are three bedrooms and one full bathroom. Natural light also illuminates the downstairs and walls of window meld indoor/outdoor space. Haas incorporated the design of shoji sliding wooden panels that enable the homeowner to customize the space. Enjoy a large bedroom with an adjoining sitting room or divide it into two separate bedrooms. Storage cabinets were also designed to be “hidden” and not inhibit smooth walls. The bathroom has been updated with a river rock shower floor and backsplash to a vessel sink.

Also in the downstairs space is a reading nook and a stacked washer and dryer.

Additional features include off-street parking for about five cars and convenient proximity to downtown restaurants and shopping. The ideal location is less than three miles to the New Brighton State Beach, about three miles to Capitola, and about eight miles to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Nicene Marks Park and Cabrillo College are also close by. Price: $1,085,000
