Stanford’s Macario earns second top college player award

Stanford junior midfielder Catarina Macario and Clemson junior forward Robbie Robinson are the Hermann Trophy winners as the top college soccer players.

Presented Friday night by the Missouri Athletic Club, the awards were determined by voting by NCAA Division I coaches.

Macario is the fifth female player to repeat as the winner and the sixth two-time women’s winner overall. She led the nation and set a Stanford record with 32 goals last season. She led the Cardinal to its third national title in December. Led by Macario, the Cardinal set a program record with 102 goals.

Macario, from San Diego, also led the NCAA assists (23) and points (87), all of which were single-season program records. The attacking midfielder is the fifth player in NCAA history to win the award two years in a row.

Robinson led the nation in points with 45 and tied for the lead in goals with 18.

U.S. MEN’S TEAM CANCELS PLAN TO TRAIN IN QATAR >> The U.S. men’s soccer team has canceled its plan to train in Doha, Qatar, from Jan. 5-25 “due to the developing situation in the region.”

The U.S. Soccer Federation announced the decision a day after a U.S. military air struck killed a top Iranian military commander. The Americans will move training to a site in the United States that has not yet been determined. They will be use a roster of players mostly from Major League Soccer ahead of an exhibition against Costa Rica in Feb. 1 at Carson.

The USSF said it hopes to train in the future at Qatar, host of the 2022 World Cup.

Baseball

GIANTS ADD ROSS, FORMER CAL PITCHER >> The Giants’ quest to build depth for their pitching staff continued as the team reportedly agreed to terms on a minor league deal with free agent right-hander Tyson Ross. Ross spent part of last season with the Detroit Tigers before a season-ending elbow injury landed him on the injured list in May. News of Friday’s deal was first reported by USA Today.

Ross, 32, is a Berkeley native who attended Bishop O’Dowd High and was drafted in the second round in 2008 by the A’s out of Cal. The righthande­r arrived in the majors in 2010 and spent the first three years of his career with the A’s before being traded to the Padres in November 2012.

College football

MUSGRAVE JOINS CAL AS OFFENSIVE COORDINATO­R >> Longtime NFL assistant Bill Musgrave was hired to become the new offensive coordinato­r at Cal. Coach Justin Wilcox announced Musgrave will replace Beau Baldwin next season for the Golden Bears. Baldwin left to become head coach at Cal Poly.

Musgrave has more than two decades of coaching experience in college and the pros and has spent 13 seasons as an offensive coordinato­r. His only college coaching job came in 2001-02 when he was offensive coordinato­r at Virginia.

After his playing career at Oregon, he was a backup quarterbac­k for the San Francisco 49ers from 1991-94 and served as offensive coordinato­r for the Raiders in 2015-16 when he helped them earn their only playoff berth in the past 17 seasons.

Musgrave most recently was on the staff of the Denver Broncos in 201718, serving as quarterbac­ks coach and then coordinato­r.

MISSISSIPP­I STATE FIRES COACH AFTER 2 SEASONS >> Mississipp­i State fired Joe Moorhead after just two seasons. The Bulldogs went 14-12 under Moorhead, who was previously the offensive coordinato­r at Penn State.

The firing comes four days after the Bulldogs (6-7) lost in the Music City Bowl. Leading up to that game, there were reports of a post-practice fight between freshman quarterbac­k Garrett Shrader and starting linebacker Willie Gay that left Shrader injured. OHIO RUNS OVER NEVADA IN POTATO BOWL >> Ohio rushed for 285 yards, led by De’Montre Tuggle’s 97 yards on 10 carries, and the Bobcats (7-6) held off a late rally by Nevada for a 30-21 win in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl at Boise, Idaho.

Nevada (7-6) struggled defensivel­y for most of the first three quarters without defensive backs Daniel Brown and Austin Arnold and lineman Hausia Sekona, and also linebacker Gabriel Sewell for the first half. Those four were suspended by the Mountain West for their roles in the postgame melee that followed Nevada’s overtime loss to UNLV on Nov. 30.

Golf

SCHAUFFELE BATTLES ELEMENTS TO TAKE LEAD AT KAPALUA >> Through bursts of rain and gusts that topped 30 mph, Xander Schauffele managed to go bogey-free for the second straight day with a 5-under 68 that gave him a one-shot lead in the Sentry Tournament of Champions over Patrick Reed (66) and Joaquin Niemann (72) at the Plantation Course at Kapalua, Hawaii.

Schauffele finished at 9-under 137, the highest 36-hole score to lead at Kapalua since 2008. Rickie Fowler (71) was two shots behind.
