Stanford women roll past WSU to open Pac-12

The fifth-ranked Stanford women topped visiting Washington State (7-7, 0-2 Pac-12) for the 66th consecutiv­e time Friday night, beating the Cougars 77-58 at Maples Pavilion in the Pac-12 opener for the Cardinal.

Nadia Fingall led Stanford (12-1) with a seasonhigh 20 points, and Haley Jones added 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists. The Cardinal has won 20 consecutiv­e conference openers.

Chenelle Molina led Washington State with 27 points.

WASHINGTON EDGES CAL >> Jaelyn Brown scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds for Cal (8-4, 0-1 Pac12), but the visiting Huskies (10-3, 2-0) scored the last six points of the game to pull out a 67-64 win. Washington’s Amber Melgoza scored 31 points, including a tying 3-pointer with a minute left and the go-ahead layup with 15 seconds remaining.

Men

WISCONSIN UPSETS NO. 5 OHIO STATE >> Nate Reuvers scored 17 points, and Wisconsin rallied late to upset No. 5 Ohio State 61-57 on the road. Reuvers’ jumper gave the Badgers (9-6, 2-1 Big Ten) a 52-51 lead with 1:54 left, and late free throws from Reuvers and D’Mitrik Trice sealed the win.

Ohio State (11-3, 1-2) became the second top-5 team in the AP Top 25 to lose this week after No. 4 Oregon fell at Colorado on Thursday.

Kaleb Wesson had 22 points and 13 rebounds for the Buckeyes.

Late Thursday highlights

DAVIS LEADS STANFORD PAST CAL >> Daejon Davis scored a season-high 20 points with six rebounds and five assists in helping Stanford beat Cal 68-52 at Maples Pavilion in the Pac12 Conference opener. Tyrell Terry added 14 points and five rebounds for the Cardinal (12-2).

Grant Anticevich scored 16 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the Bears (6-8), who lost their fourth straight.

California’s two leading scorers Matt Bradley and Kareem South were a combined 2-of-17 shooting for eight points early in the second half. Bradley finished with 13 points and has reached double figures in all but one game.

SAINT MARYS ROLLS >> Malik Fitts scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and Saint Mary’s topped USF 69-58 in the West Coast Conference opener at Memorial Gym. Jordan Ford added 16 points for Saint

Mary’s (14-2). Charles Minlend had 15 points for the Dons (11-5).

NORTH CAROLINA FRESHMAN

HARRIS (KNEE) OUT FOR SEASON >> North Carolina freshman guard Anthony Harris, who sustained a torn ACL in his right knee on Monday, will miss the rest of the 2019-20 season. Harris, whose surgery is scheduled for next week, was injured in a 7067 victory over Yale on Monday night.

UTEP COACH TERRY RELEASED

FROM HOSPITAL >> UTEP coach Rodney Terry was discharged from a Miami hospital after being admitted in critical condition. A statement issued by the university said Terry was taken to the hospital on Wednesday night suffering from anaphylact­ic shock caused by an allergic reaction. On Friday, the university said he was released.
