PALO ALTO >> Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying three burglars who broke into the Bloomingdale’s at Stanford Shopping Center last week and stole $83,000 worth of jewelry and watches.

The burglary was reported at 2:12 a.m. Tuesday, Palo Alto police spokeswoman Janine De la Vega said in a news release Thursday.

Security guards saw a person run to a car parked outside the luxury department store. The car then sped away with its lights off.

De la Vega said the security guards also discovered shattered glass at the east entrance of Bloomingdale’s, as well as smashed display cases and merchandise missing.

A surveillance camera recorded a person using rocks to smash open a glass door at 2:05 a.m., De la Vega said. At least two people then entered the store and used rocks to smash display cases. After grabbing jewelry and watches, they ran to a car.

De la Vega said the car, which apparently was driven by a third person, was last seen traveling north on El Camino Real. It was described as a white 1990s BMW 3 Series.

An investigation is underway, and detectives are looking into the possibility that the burglary is connected to similar incidents in surrounding cities, De la Vega said. Police also released footage of the burglary in the hopes someone might recognize the suspects.
