Fantastic finish lifts Santa Clara past Saint Mary’s

Josip Vrancik scored 22 points, including the goahead basket with 9.4 seconds left, as Santa Clara stunned Saint Mary’s 6766 in Moraga on Saturday night.

Santa Clara (15-3 overall, 2-1 WCC) trailed 6255 with 3:37 to play. But a traditiona­l 3-point play by Vrankic, followed by a 3-point basket from Trey Wertz cut the deficit to 6261 as they rallied for their first road win in the series since 2014. SCU made its final seven attempts from the field.

Saint Mary’s (15-4, 2-2), which had played five overtime periods in its previous two games, shot 37 percent. Jordan Ford led the Gaels with 30 points on nine for 18 shooting. Malik Fitts had 17 points, but missed 11 of 14 shots.

Vrankic, who also led SCU in rebounds with 10, got help from D.J. Mitchell. The junior forward had 16 points and eight rebounds. STANFORD 88, WASHINGTON STATE 62 >> Freshman Tyrell Terry scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds as Stanford remained the lone unbeaten team in Pac-12 play.

The Cardinal (14-2, 3-0 Pac-12) is off to its best start since the 2003-04 season. Oscar da Silva scored all 15 of his points in the first half and Bryce Wills added 10 points and five assists for Stanford. CAL 61, WASHINGTON 58 >> Matt Bradley banked in a 3-pointer with six seconds remaining in overtime, to lift the Bears.

Bradley finished with 17 points and five rebounds to help the Golden Bears (8-8, 2-1 Pac-12) to their second straight win after a fourgame losing streak. Grant Anticevich added 13 points and seven rebounds, and Paris Austin scored 10.

The Huskies (11-6, 1-3) rallied from 10 down in the final 12 minutes of the second half but made only one basket in overtime.

USF 79, PACIFIC 75 >> Charles Minlend scored 19 points, and Jimbo Lull added 13 with nine rebounds for the Dons (13-6, 2-2 West Coast Conference).

COLORADO STATE 81, SAN JOSE STATE 70 >> The Spartans rallied to tie the score with less than four minutes remaining, but the Rams responded with an 8-0 run and then pulled away to end SJSU’S threegame home winning streak.

Seneca Knight scored 21 points with eight rebounds for SJSU (6-12, 2-4 Mountain West).
