SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. >> Under president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi, the Giants have valued players with minor league options who can be sent back and forth from San Francisco to Triple-A Sacramento.

The team’s latest acquisition, Jarlin García, doesn’t have any options left, but he could be a strong candidate to join the team’s Opening Day bullpen.

The Giants claimed García off waivers from the Miami Marlins on Monday and designated right-handed pitcher Burch Smith for assignment. Smith appeared in 10 games for the 2019 Giants and posted a 2.08 ERA over 8 2/3 innings.

García struggled in each of his first two major league seasons with the Marlins but enjoyed a breakthrough last year as he finished with a 3.02 ERA in 53 games. García only struck out 39 batters in 50 2/3 innings, but showed solid command and ended his third season in Miami with a 141 ERA+ (league average is 100).

In the new era of a threebatter minimum, García also provides the Giants with a left-handed option who handles both righties and lefties well. In 2019, right-handed batters posted a .603 OPS against García while lefties were only two points lower at .601.

García will battle with a few other left-handers including Andrew Suárez, former Reds reliever Wandy Peralta and non-roster invitee Jerry Blevins for a spot in the Giants’ bullpen. Veteran Tony Watson is clearly the team’s top left-handed option, but outside of Watson, the team doesn’t have much proven left-handed depth.

Southpaws Conner Menez and Sam Selman also have major league experience and can pitch in relief, but the Giants are more likely to send each pitcher to Triple-A Sacramento to open the year.

If García fails to win a job this spring, he cannot be optioned to the minor leagues unless he clears waivers and gives the Giants his approval. Smith, who was added on a waiver claim from Milwaukee last summer, had one option available.
