A 17-year-old male who was shot by BART police at the El Cerrito del Norte station Saturday afternoon is expected to survive injuries that initially were considered life-threatening, a spokesman for the agency said Sunday.

The teen was shot around 2 p.m. Saturday after officers responded to a report that he may have been armed with a gun aboard a train.

BART spokesman Chris Filippi said that as of Sunday afternoon, the teen was still in the hospital and “has not yet been booked” into jail.

Filippi didn’t provide additional updates on the incident Sunday.

Officers were sent to the station when a passenger on a train bound for Fremont’s Warm Springs called authorities, saying she had seen two riders in an argument, one of whom had “what she thought was a handgun in his waistband,” BART Police Chief Ed Alvarez said Saturday.

When the train arrived at the El Cerrito del Norte station, Alvarez said, two BART officers “challenged” the male subject with their guns drawn.

The person ran out of the train, down the station platform and onto the tracks, Alvarez said.

The person then “produced” a gun as he stood in the station’s trackway. A gun was later recovered.

Alvarez did not answer questions about whether the male pointed the gun at officers, or if it fell out of his waistband.

He said the agency was reviewing video footage of the shooting from station security cameras and the officers’ body-worn cameras.

A witness on the train said a young woman who ran after the male was screaming, “He’s only 17, he’s just 17.”

Authorities confirmed the teen’s age Sunday afternoon but have not released his identity or additional details about his condition.
