Intrepid Travel’s list of alternatives to overtouristed destinations 2020
Overtourism and its environmental implications have you reconsidering your bucket list? Even though you’re dying to visit Norway’s Spitsbergen, perhaps switching to Greenland, a great alternative for seeing the splendor of the Arctic, is a better idea.
Intrepid Travel, the adventure travel tour website, is making sustainable sightseeing a priority. The website recently released its annual “Not Hot List,” which spotlights 10lesser-discovered destinations, like Canada’s Haida Gwaii Islands, known as “the Galapagos of the North.”
“There is a desire from tourists to ensure they are benefiting the communities they visit and local people they meet, while respecting their cultures, economy and the environment too,” CEO James Thornton said. “The ‘Not Hot List’ aims to meet this growing demand and promote lesser-known destinations that are just as worthy of travelers’ time.” Thinking about a Croatian wine tour? Nearby Moldova,
which receives 160,000overnight visitors a year — nearly the amount Croatia welcomes daily — houses the largest wine cellar in the world at the Milestii Mici winery. (Its 120miles of underground passages are lined with two million bottles.) Crave more? Here’s Intrepid Travel’s “Not Hot List of Alternatives to Overtouristed Destinations”:

2 Gambia
3 Greenland
4 The Haida Gwaii Islands
