The Bottom Line: Every now and then I get a press car that is just a lot of fun to drive every day. Easy to get into, easy to get out of, easy to park, easy to load, easy on gas too. This week Mitsubishi sent me a 2020 Outlander Sport GT to review. This is the younger brother of the Mitsubishi Outlander that is their signature larger SUV.
What is the difference between an Outlander and an Outlander Sport? The first key difference between these two Outlanders is size. The Outlander is a full size SUV offering third row seating, while its sportier GT counterpart remains a more compact SUV, with seating for five passengers. In this review we will look at the Outlander Sport GT.
The 2020 Outlander Sport is a fuel efficient, economical mid size SUV that takes you farther for less fuel, thanks to its intelligent design. Don’t get caught up at the gas pump. EPA mileage is 23 MPG in the city, 28 MPG on the highway, with a nice 25 MPG miles per gallon in combined driving.
The GT engine is a 2.4L liter DOHC dual overhead cam MIVEC Mitsubishi engine with intelligent AWC All Wheel Control with a 4WD four wheel drive traction system coupled to a continuously variable transmission. And to reduce engine load all Outlanders have electric power steering.
The list of safety and security features is over 20 items long. Here are just three of them:
At the top of the list is one of the most important safety features ever developed. It’s called FCM Forward Collision Migration with Pedestrian Detection. Standard on all GT Outlanders is the forward collision mitigation system with the pedestrian detection system that helps to determine if a frontal collision with a vehicle, or a pedestrian, is likely.
If so, it warns the driver with audible and visual alerts and applies braking to help reduce, or entirely avoid , the severity of a collision. This is a vital safety system that should be on all cars worldwide ASAP. It will save lives, limit injuries and reduce property damage every day. Mitsubishi has this super safety system on their vehicles today, not tomorrow.
The RCTA Rear Cross Traffic Alert system detects a vehicle approaching from either side while you’re backing up. The warning lights on both side mirrors will blink, a buzzer will sound to alert you, and a warning message will appear on the information screen of the multi information color display.
ASC Active Stability Control employs a series of sensors that constantly monitor the grip of each tire. If a wheel begins to slip, ASC automatically communicates with the ABS Anti lock Braking System to help you maintain control of the vehicle in just about any situation.
Now to the price: The base price for this 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport 2.4 GT AWC 4 Door 4WD SUV starts at only $26,895. The options on the test car are: Red Diamond paint for $595, a rear Tonneau cover for $190, and carpeted floor mats for $145. The total MSRP manufacturer’s suggested retail price, including the $1,095 destination charge, came to: $28,920.
For less than $29,000 on the window sticker this SUV can do more than most for the price. It’s a real value leader in the midsize 4 door 4WD SUV category. To add to that value is 10 years of confidence. You can seamlessly switch between your music, maps and contacts through the 8 inch touch screen, or by voice control, with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, or the Bluetooth connectivity apps that make it simple to take your world on the go.
And then enjoy your favorite playlists, podcasts or audiobooks in high fidelity. With deep sounding bass and crystal clear trebles, the Mitsubishi Power Sound System, which is standard on the GT models, delivers the audio sounds that makes every journey more memorable.
My time in this ruby Red Diamond painted Outlander Sport GT has been a very pleasant experience. This SUV looks great, has all the convenience options you want, and has a sporty driving attitude. It is stable in the turns with the AWC control system, quick on the highway with the larger 2.4L engine, and has all the electronic gizmos that make driving it feel very safe. It is a nice, all around, 4 door SUV, to drive everyday. And it really does cost under
