Coming Soon: Portola Valley Home Nestled in the Woods is a Work of Art

- By Monica Lander

A beautifully crafted home nestled along the Los Trancos Woods neighborhood in Portola Valley is also a work of art that harmonizes with its natural surroundings that spans over two separate lots and about a one-third acre.

Captivating views of the Bay, especially from its expansive deck, fine finishes, and flexible use space, are featured in this almost 2,400 square feet of living space on two levels at 144 Los Trancos Circle. Its larger, adjoining parcel, offers the unique opportunity to build an ADU or separate single-family home.

One of the Bay Area’s more exclusive communities off Highway 280 between San Francisco and Silicon Valley, Portola Valley is home to about 4,500 residents in about 1,700 homes. Almost 2,000 acres of permanent open space surround this quiet and rural town offering miles of walking trails. Yet, its centralized location is only about eight miles from the Stanford Shopping Center, and Stanford

University, about 15 miles from Google headquarters, and less than 30 miles from either the San Francisco or San Jose International airports. Downtown markets, restaurants and cafes are within three miles.

Redwood City Architects Herring & Worley, Inc. designed this architectural gem that was built in 1998 to mimic the graceful curves, angles, and nuances of a concert piano in deference to its original owner, a former San Francisco Symphony concert pianist. The design is subtle and resonates with a peaceful, almost Zen quality. The contemporary style showcases redwood siding, slate tile and hardwood floors, soaring ceilings, picture windows, clerestory, glass doors, custom built-in furniture and maple cabinetry, gallery hallways, and recessed and artistic glass pendant lights,

The main level is an open, light-drenched living space with a vaulted ceiling and clerestory for additional light and treetop views. A gas fireplace anchors the living room with a granite hearth on one side opposite walls of windows and glass door access to the inviting backyard venue. Step down into the spacious dining room that features sleek gallery lighting and wraparound windows, including a frameless corner window that cantilevers over the garden.

An expansive deck with a sleek steel cable railing offers an ideal venue to entertain and dine alfresco. Grab a comfy chair and slide up to the propane fire pit and savor the peacefulness of the surroundings. Walkways traverse the gently sloped yard, and steps meander up to the private hot tub and a perfect vista. The San Francisco landscape architecture firm, Conger Moss Guillard, married an attractive landscape with towering evergreens including oaks, and the natural terrain.

Refinished custom cabinetry, custom-built open shelves, and granite counters, and backsplash grace the spacious chef ’s kitchen. A stylish contemporary light fixture suspends from the soaring and exposed beam ceiling illuminating the island/ breakfast bar. A convenient built-in workstation is also nearby. Beautiful views are also framed in this room that is well appointed with stainless appliances that include a Thermador oven and Miele dishwasher, and a Thermador four-burner-plusgrill cooktop with a retractable exhaust vent designed to not interfere with the views.

There are three bedrooms, including a main level master suite in addition to a lower level study/media room that would make an ideal en suite bedroom and an office space that can also be used as a bedroom. This bedroom wing also has a private entrance and access to a flagstone patio.

A lower-level bedroom features a floor-to-ceiling custom designed closet and access to a front-facing redwood deck it shares with a second bedroom/office.

Floor-to-ceiling built-in cabinetry provides lots of storage options for the master suite. Shower as if one-withnature as you view the trees from the clerestory in the master shower. Enjoy the luxury of beautiful marble finishes, a seamless glass enclosure, and additional built-in cabinets.

A slate-tile floor, granite counter, and a tub/shower combination with a slate tile surround are featured in the additional full bathroom.

Additional features include an electric vehicle load center and charging station in the two-car garage, an updated water heater, storage closets, Miele front-loading washer and dryer with granite counter, and a wet bar with a builtin beverage refrigerator. A powder room is located off the living room with backyard and hot tub access. Price: $2,200,000
