Rep. Mark DeSaulnier has returned to his Washington, D.C., home nearly two months after being hospitalized for complications from pneumonia following a running accident, his office announced Monday morning.

“While he’s made truly remarkable progress and has come so far, our dad still has work to do and we appreciate his friends and constituents affording him time and support as the next phase of his recovery begins,” his sons, Tristan and Tucker DeSaulnier, said in a statement issued by the congressman’s office.

DeSaulnier, D-Concord, is eager to get back to California, but he’ll continue his recovery in the capital until

his doctors determine it’s safe for him to fly, according to the statement.

Although the congressman’s hospitalization happened amid the coronavirus pandemic, it was not related to COVID-19, for which he tested negative.

DeSaulnier is a cancer survivor, avid runner and former marathoner who represents most of Contra Costa County. He was hospitalized and placed in intensive care on March 13. The pneumonia stemmed from a fractured rib he suffered when he fell during a run on Capitol Hill.

His office reported on March 16 that he was in serious but stable condition. But his condition deteriorated to critical by March 21. Updates on March 24 and 31 said his condition was critical but stable. On April 13, his chief of staff, Betsy Arnold Marr, said he was no longer in critical condition.
