1917: Babe Ruth of the Red Sox allowed two hits as he outdueled Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators 1-0. Ruth knocked in the winning run with a sacrifice fly.
1929: Dick Williams, manager of the World Champion Swingin’ A’s in 1972and 1973, is born in St. Louis, Missouri (d. 2011).
1933: Hall of Fame quarterback Johnny Unitas is born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
1938: Jockey Eddie Arcaro wins the first of his record five Kentucky Derby wreaths.
1957: Cleveland pitcher Herb Score is in the right eye by a line drive off the bat of Gil McDougald, ending his season and derailing his career.
