Woman, 56, killed in shootout with San Mateo County sheriff’s deputies
HALF MOON BAY >> A woman was shot and killed by deputies Tuesday in Half Moon Bay after she fired a shotgun at them, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office identified the woman Wednesday as Sandra Lee Harmon, 56, a resident of Half Moon Bay.
Deputies were called to the 800 block of Main Street about 7:25 p.m. for a report of a woman carrying a firearm and alcohol, the Sheriff’s Office said. A local business owner told the Half Moon Bay Review that she saw the woman pass by carrying a weapon and a bottle of wine.
“Upon arrival, deputies gave her multiple verbal commands to drop her weapon,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a tweet announcing the officer-involved shooting. “She did not comply and fired her shotgun at deputies. Deputies returned fire, striking the woman.”
Harmon was taken to a hospital, where she died of her injuries, the sheriff’s office said.
An image released by the Sheriff’s Office shows a crime scene cordoned off in the parking lot of Pasta Moon restaurant.
Additional information about the shooting was not available Wednesday morning. The Sheriff’s Office did not say if the deputies or anyone else was injured.
The officer-involved shooting is the third in the Bay Area in recent days. In San Jose, an officer shot at but missed an armed suspect Friday. Officers in that city also shot and killed a suspect in a fatal stabbing near the SAP Center on Sunday morning.
