1933: Chicago Tribune sports editor Arch Ward announces an exciting new event — an All Star game of major league players — will be played July 6 at Comiskey Park as part of the Chicago World’s Fair.
1937: Brooks Robinson, Hall of Famer at the hot corner, is born in Little Rock, Arkansas.
1946: Reggie Jackson is born in Wyncote, Pennsylvania, comes out swinging.
1957: Eddie Arcaro, aboard Bold Ruler, wins the Preakness for the sixth (and final) time.
1963: Marty McSorley, is born in Hamilton, Ontario, comes out fighting.
1963: Ernie Davis, the first AfricanAmerican to win Heisman Trophy (1961, Syracuse) and one of the saddest stories ever told, dies of leukemia at 23.
1971: The Montreal Canadiens beat the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 7 to win the Stanley Cup.
1983: Rose Bowl hero and NFL quarterback Vince Young is born in Houston, Texas, comes out slinging like Uncle Rico. 1990: Edmonton’s Jari Kurri sets record for scoring in a Stanley Cup Final game with three goals and two assists, along the way becoming the all-time leading goal scorer (90) in playoff history — all on the occasion of his 30th birthday.
1990: Ryne Sandberg of the Cubs makes an error for the first time in 123 games, a record for second basemen.
2003: The Texas Rangers sweep three games at Yankee Stadium for the first time in the franchise’s 43-year existence. 2004: Randy Johnson at age 40 becomes the oldest pitcher in major league history to pitch a perfect game, breaking the standard set in 1904by Cy Young at 37.
2012: Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia, 65, becomes the first player in Professional Bowlers Association history to win a national or senior tour title in six decades, having won his first in 1966.
2013: Gerardo Parra hits the first pitch of the game for a home run and the Arizona Diamondbacks win 1-0. The last time the only run of a game was scored on the first pitch was 1963, when Cincinnati rookie Pete Rose homered to start a game at the Polo Grounds against the Mets.
