1922: Gene Tunney suffers the only loss of his boxing career, by unanimous decision after 15 rounds with Harry Greb at Madison Square Garden. Tunney entered with a 40-0-1 record and was 65-1-1 when he retired. 1924: Washington’s Walter Johnson struck out 14 in a 4-0 one-hitter over the Chicago White Sox for his 103rd shutout. His 110 career shutouts are 20 more than anybody in history. 1924: Clyde King, the Giants’ manager in 1969-70 til he got crosswise with Willie Mays, is born in Goldsboro, North Carolina (d. 2010) 1935: The first major league night game, scheduled for Cincinnati, is postponed because of rain. 1948: Joe DiMaggio hit three consecutiv­e home runs, the first two off Bob Feller, to lead the New York Yankees to 6-5 win over Cleveland. 1952: Boxing champ “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler is born in Newark, N.J. 1969: Golfer Pat Hurst, the pride of San Jose State, is born in San Leandro, California 1991: Tommy Greene, making the 15th start of his major league career, pitched a no-hitter and the Philadelph­ia Phillies beat Montreal 2-0. 1997: In the first all-freshman singles final in NCAA history, Stanford’s Lilia Osterloh beats Florida’s M.C. White 6-1, 6-1 to win the national championsh­ip. 2002: Los Angeles Dodgers’ slugger Shawn Green becomes the 14th man in major league history to homer four times in a game. 2009: Jason Giambi of the A’s hits his 400th homer, becoming the 44th player to reach the milestone. 2010: The No. 1-seeded Sharks are swept out of the Western Conference Finals by the Chicago Blackhawks.
