College-sponsored National Merit Scholarship winners announced

The initial list of collegesponsored National Merit Scholarship winners includes 105 students from high schools across the Bay Area.

Each institution financing the 3,300-plus scholarships — which range from $500 to $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study — selected its winners from a pool of 15,000 finalists.

Forty two USC-bound graduates in the Bay Area received the award.

The remaining collegesponsored winners are scheduled to be announced July 13.

In the Bay Area, 169 students were among the more than 2,500 nationwide winners of the prestigious $2,500 National Merit Scholarships announced last month.

A list of about 1,000 corporate-sponsored scholarships announced in April included 42 students from the Bay Area.

Academic and leadership skills, extracurricular exploits in school and community and the potential to succeed in college were factors considered in picking the National Merit Scholarship winners.
