Officers shoot, kill man, injure woman

OAKLAND >> California Highway Patrol officers shot and killed the driver of a vehicle and wounded a passenger on Oakland’s east side late Saturday, authoritie­s said.

Authoritie­s said a male driver was killed and his female passenger wounded after they were shot about 10:46 p.m. in the 9600 block of Cherry Street, a primarily residentia­l area.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and the passenger was taken to a hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.

Oakland police took the lead on investigat­ing and said the CHP officers were conducting a criminal investigat­ion when the shooting happened. Authoritie­s did not release any details about the investigat­ion.

Oakland police did not release any more informatio­n about the two adults shot, including their ages, where they were from or what their relationsh­ip was.

Police did not say how many CHP officers fired shots, how many rounds were fired or what prompted them to fire on the vehicle.

The Oakland Police Department’s Criminal Investigat­ions Division, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office and the California Highway Patrol Critical Incident Investigat­ions Team are conducting independen­t investigat­ions.
