DMV considering online tests for teens who seek permits

-

QVermonters can take their learner’s permit exam online, and if they pass, receive their permit by mail within three weeks.

Any chance we’ll see that from the California DMV any time soon?

My kid is turning 18 this month, going away to college (well, maybe) this fall, and he needs to learn to drive! — Mark FeAro,Millbrae, Aka Dad, the Chauffeur A Maybe. The DMV is considering online testing for teen permits instead of behind the wheel tests, which are now suspended because of COVID-19. So many teens are caught in limbo, anxious to drive but unable to schedule an appointment. Q I have to take the eye test for my driver license because I’m over 70. With all the DMVs closed, I went to AAA on Almaden Expressway to get the driver’s manual. They say they can’t give out any paper products during the pandemic. I was hoping to get something from Senter Road

DMV, but it was so crowded and I was scared of being around all those people even with my mask on, so I left.

Where can I download the manual?

Go to www.dmv. ca.gov and check the cheat sheet, which offers the 50 questions and answers most likely to be on the test. Q Back in the police academy, we referred to drivers going 100 mph as the Willie Brown Law. The reason? The former speaker of the House used to travel from San Francisco to Sacramento in his Porsche at speeds exceeding 100 mph, and he did it all the time.

A few years later, Mayor Brown officiated at the marriage of my wife and I in a tiny ceremony in San Francisco’s City Hall.

I wore a tuxedo and thought I looked pretty good. Mayor Brown walked out of his office wearing a splendid brown suit and put me to shame. That man is the best clothes horse on the planet. Wow.

— Jim Thurber, MountAin View A That — he 100 is, mph? but Willie Q A friend and I parked on Highway 1 in Santa Cruz near the lighthouse like many other drivers. There was no sign restricting parking. The loop to the lighthouse had parking restrictions, but I can’t find anything in the driver’s handbook that I can’t park on Highway 1.

On my way back to Los Gatos, I saw hundreds of cars parked on Highway 1 and no tickets.

Is our ticket legit?

— KlAus SchumAnn,

Los GAtos A Most likely. It is illegal to park on the shoulder except in an emergency, but so many do from Big Sur to Half Moon Bay.
