Two days after setting a single-day record for confirmed novel coronavirus cases Friday, California counted another 2,190 cases Sunday, bringing its total to 130,690.

The state released guidelines last week, allowing individual counties to begin reopening gyms, bars, campgrounds, professional sports and a wide range of businesses. At the same time, the number of new reported COVID-19 cases has continued to climb in recent weeks.

According to data compiled by this new organization, the seven-day average of new daily cases Sunday was 2,702. That number is down down slightly from Friday’s seven-day average, which was 2.773 and was the highest seven-day average since the start of the pandemic.

California’s death toll from COVID-19 rose to 4,532 deaths Sunday, the data shows. However, there were just 28 new fatalities counted Sunday, 25 of those were in Los Angeles County. Some counties don’t report data over the weekend, but the fact that Los Angeles reported the majority of fatalities Sunday is in keeping with that county suffering the brunt of the pandemic in California.

The 10 Bay Area counties reached 15,730 total cases Sunday, with 202 new cases reported. Similar to the state, the Bay Area’s sevenday average of new daily cases has risen in the past several weeks. The region’s seven-day average Sunday was 224; since May 21, the seven-day average of new cases has remained above 200.

The Bay Area also recorded two new deaths Sunday, one each in Santa Clara and Contra Costa counties. That brings the region’s total death toll to 464.
