1951: Dave Parker, who had 97 RBIs for the
1989 world champion A’s, is born in Grenada, Mississippi.
1963: Playing the first Sunday night game in MLB history because of excessive heat in Houston, the Giants fall to their seventh straight loss.
1973: Secretariat, ridden by Ron Turcotte, wins the Belmont Stakes — by 31 lengths! — to complete the Triple Crown.
1974: Randy Winn, former Giants outfielder and backcourt mate of Steve Nash at Santa Clara, is born in Los Angeles.
1978: Larry Holmes scores a 15-round split decision over Ken Norton for the WBC heavyweight title in New York.
1980: The Giants’ game in Philadelphia ends at 3:11 a.m. after two rain delays. Giants rally to win 3-1, getting a two-run homer in the eighth inning from Jack Clark.
1985: The Lakers win the NBA championship, finally beating the Boston Celtics after having gone 0-8 in NBA Finals against them.
1986: Tom Seaver (306 wins) and Don Sutton (298) face off in the winningest pitching matchup ever, surpassing Walter Johnson (406) vs. Red Faber (197) in 1926. Sutton pitches a two-hit shutout as the Angels beat the White Sox 3-0.
1990: Monica Seles, 16, becomes the youngest winner of the French Open, beating two-time champion Steffi Graf.
1991: In the first all-American men’s final at the French Open since 1954, Jim Courier rallies to beat Andre Agassi 3-6, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 for his first Grand Slam title.
1993: The Montreal Canadiens win their 24th Stanley Cup, beating the Los Angeles Kings in five games.
2001: Jennifer Capriati, 25, wins her second consecutive Grand Slam title, following her victory at the Australian Open by defeating Kim Clijsters 1-6, 6-4, 12-10 in the French Open final. 2003: The New Jersey Devils win the Stanley Cup, ending a Disney-like run by the seventh-seeded Anaheim Mighty Ducks. 2007: Justine Henin wins the French Open for the third year in a row, matching the longest streak since 1924 (Monica Seles, 1990-92).
2007: Rags to Riches becomes the first filly in more than a century to win the Belmont.
2008: Ken Griffey Jr. becomes the sixth player in MLB history with 600 home runs, joining Aaron, Ruth, Mays, Bonds and Sammy Sosa.
2010: The Chicago Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup for the first time in 49 years.
2012: Maria Sharapova completes the career Grand Slam by winning the French Open final over Sara Errani 6-3, 6-2.
