Drive-in movies are back

- — Jim Harrington and Randy McMullen, Staff

The West Wind Drive-In movie theaters in San Jose and Concord have reopened for business, following a temporary shutdown due to county and municipal curfews enacted earlier in the month. Those came about as a response to looting and civil unrest reported during some of the protests staged over the death of George Floyd. But the Solano Drive-In in Concord and Capitol DriveIn in San Jose are now open again and join the theater chain’s Sacramento-area facility to offer three outdoor movie options in Northern California. This weekend’s lineups were not available at press time, but the drive-ins have been offering double bills featuring a mix of classic films such as “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” and fairly recent horror and adventure releases such as “The Invisible Man.” Meanwhile, drive-in fans will get an additional option beginning this weekend. From Friday through Aug. 1, the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton will host “pop-up drive-in movies” Friday and Saturday nights. On Friday, you can catch “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark” on Friday and “The Goonies” on Saturday. Details: West Wind screenings are $8.25 general admission; $1.75 for ages 5-11 and free for kids under 5; “Family Fun Night” on Tuesdays costs $5.50; www.westwinddi.com; Alameda Fairgrounds drive-in costs $25 in advance, $30 at the gate per car; see schedule and more information at alamedacountyfair.com/movie-drive-ins.
