1894: Basketball inventor James Naismith (32) weds Maude Evelyn Sherman (23) in Springfiel­d, Mass. (Hereafter he rarely is seen on the playground­s around town.) 1936: Jesse Owens sets a 100-meter record of 10.2 seconds at a meet in Chicago. 1956: Mickey Mantle hits two home runs into the right centerfiel­d bleachers at Detroit’s Briggs Stadium, the first player to reach the bleachers since they were built in the late 1930s. 1960: Floyd Patterson knocks out Ingemar Johansson in the fifth round in New York to become the first boxer to regain the world heavyweigh­t title. 1964: Ken Venturi, San Francisco’s own and the pride of San Jose State University, wins the U.S. Open. 1973: Chicago’s Cy Acosta becomes the first American League pitcher to bat since the designated hitter rule went into effect at the start of the season. 1973: San Francisco’s Bobby Bonds hits his 22nd leadoff home run, breaking Lou Brock’s National League record. (The current record for the N.L. is 53 by Craig Biggio. Rickey Henderson holds the MLB record with 81.) 1980: Freddie Patek, a 5-foot-5, 148-pound shortstop whose 14-year career produced 41 home runs, hits three in one game for the Angels at Fenway Park. 1980: Roberto Duran wins a 15-round decision over Sugar Ray Leonard in Montreal to win the world welterweig­ht crown. 1993: John Paxson hits a 3-pointer with 3.9 seconds left as the Chicago Bulls win their third consecutiv­e NBA title with a 99-98 victory over the Phoenix Suns in Game 6. 1994: Ernie Els of South Africa becomes the first foreign winner of the U.S. Open since 1981 (Australian David Graham). 2004: Retief Goosen captures his second U.S. Open in four years. 2004: Ken Griffey Jr. hits his 500th home run. 2006: Dwyane Wade scores 36 points and grabs 10 rebounds as the Miami Heat wins the NBA title with a Game 6 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. 2007: Sammy Sosa becomes the fifth player with 600 home runs, joining Aaron, Ruth and Mays and also Barry Bonds. 2010: Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland wins the U.S. Open, becoming the first European to win America’s national championsh­ip since 1970 (Britain’s Tony Jacklin.). 2011: The Florida Marlins make Jack McKeon, 80, the second-oldest manager in major league history. Connie Mack managed the Philadelph­ia Athletics in a suit, tie and straw hat until 1950, when he was 87. 2015: Max Scherzer pitches a no-hitter, losing his perfect game with two outs in the ninth inning when he hits a batter. 2017: Joe West becomes the third umpire in MLB history to work 5,000 games, joining Hall of Famer Bill Klem (5,375) and Bruce Froemming (5,163).
