Virtual tips: S.F. Opera, AIDS Quilt
Here are some new online posts arts fans should know about. AIDS Quilt: The Bay Area-based National AIDS Memorial has unveiled a new website that features some impressive attractions. Chief among them is a new interactive view of the 48,000-panel AIDS Memorial Quilt. You can scan the entire work and pull in for close-ups or search by name for certain panels. The site also features scores of video biographies of those whose lives have been touched by AIDS. Details: You can find all this and more for free; www.aidsmemorial.org. San Francisco Opera: The company’s “Opera Is On” streaming series has announced two more hit performances. On Saturday, the company is offering its 2014 production of Rossini’s “La Cenerentola” (Cinderella), starring French soprano Karine Deshayes and American tenor René Barbera (in Italian with English subtitles, 2 hours, 38 minutes); and on July 25 is a 2010 performance of Janáček’s “The Makropulos Case,” starring Finnish soprano Karita Mattila (in Czech with English subtitles, 1 hour, 52 minutes). Details: Performances are free and available from 10 a.m. on the posting date until 11:59 p.m. the following day; sfopera.com. Randall Museum: The San Francisco natural history museum is hosting Ocean Week — online, that is. Head to the museum’s Facebook or Instagram pages or YouTube account from Friday through July 26 and you’ll find ocean-themed videos, hands-on science and art projects to do at home and more. There’s also a virtual ocean party 1 p.m. July 26. Snoop around and you’ll find some activities and fun stuff left over from the museum’s recent Bug Week.
