Orlando City takes top spot after draw

Mauricio Pereyra’s goal midway through the second half gave Orlando City a 1-1 draw with the Philadelph­ia Union on Monday night and the top spot out of Group A in the MLS is Back tournament near Orlando, Florida.

Orlando and Philadelph­ia each finished with two wins and a draw in the group stage. A better goal differenti­al gave Orlando City took the top spot in the knockout round.

Orlando City (2-1-2) will play a third-place finisher from group play in the round of 16 on Saturday. Philadelph­ia (2-1-2) will play the second-place team out of Group C.

Ilsinho put Philadelph­ia ahead a few minutes after coming on as a substitute. His third career goal against Orlando City came after a long stretch where Orlando dominated scoring chances. Ilsinho’s rightfoote­d shot beat Pedro Gallese to the far post.

Orlando responded almost immediatel­y. Portuguese winger Nani curled a cross into the penalty area and Pereyra’s run was timed perfectly for his header to beat Philadelph­ia goalkeeper Andre Blake’s diving attempt. GALAXY’S CHICARITO OFFICIALLY RULED OUT FOR REST OF TOURNEY >> The Los Angeles Galaxy confirmed that striker Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez will miss three to four weeks due to a calf injury.

The Galaxy concludes group play in the MLS is Back Tournament on Thursday, and the tournament final is scheduled for Aug. 11, meaning Chicharito won’t play again in the event.

Chicharito, the all-time leading scorer for Mexico’s national team, had stints with Mexico’s Chivas Guadalajar­a, England’s Manchester United, Spain’s Real Madrid and Germany’s Bayer Leverkusen prior to his move to Los Angeles.

BECKHAM’S MIAMI EXPANSION TEAM AT 0-5 >> David Beckham’s Inter Miami became the first Major League Soccer team to lose its first five games when Ismael Tajouri-Shradi scored idway through the second half Monday in New York City’s 1-0 victory.

Miami is just the fifth MLS team to start any season 0-5. All five losses have been by one goal, and Miami led in two of the matches.

NYCFC (1-4) won for the first time in the 2020 season and guaranteed a third-place finish in Group A with three points. But NYCFC will need help from others to advance in the MLS is Back tournament as one of the top four thirdplace finishers.

MORRIS, LODEIRO LEAD SOUNDERS PAST RIVAL WHITECAPS >> Nicolas Lodeiro scored from the penalty spot early in the first half, Jordan Morris added to the lead with his third goal of the season, and the Seattle Sounders beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-0 in the MLS is Back tournament late Sunday night.

Seattle (2-1-2) clinched a spot in the knockout round of the tournament. Seattle will finish either second or third in Group B, depending on Chicago’s final group stage match. The top four third-place finishers among all the group advance to the round of 16 and Seattle has at worst clinched one of those spots.

BALLON D’OR CANCELED >> The prestigiou­s Ballon d’Or will not be awarded this year because the coronaviru­s pandemic has disrupted the soccer season.

Awarded by France Football magazine, the Ballon d’Or has been given out every year since Stanley Matthews won the first one in 1956. Lionel Messi has won it a record six times — one more than longtime rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

The magazine started giving out a women’s award in 2018, but that has also been put on hold.

NBA, MLS SAY NO NEW POSITIVE COVID-19 TESTS >> The NBA and Major League Soccer said on Monday no new positive COVID-19 cases were uncovered in the latest rounds of testing at their respective bubblelike campuses at Disney World in Florida.

NHL SUSPENDS RANGERS’ LEMIEUX FOR 2 PRELIMINAR­Y ROUND GAMES >> New York Rangers forward Brendan Lemieux has been suspended for the first two games of the team’s preliminar­y-round series against Carolina because of an illegal check that injured Colorado forward Joonas Donskoi in March.

The league’s department of player safety announced the suspension Monday.

Lemieux was suspended for a late and blindside hit on Donskoi in the final minutes of regulation of the Rangers 3-2 overtime loss at Colorado on March 11. Donskoi entered the Rangers zone and cut into the middle, where he got off a shot on net before being struck from the side by Lemieux.

CARLSON, HEDMAN AND JOSI NAMED NHL NORRIS TROPHY FINALISTS >> Washington’s John Carlson, Tampa Bay’s Victor Hedman and Nashville’s Roman Josi have been named the finalists for the NHL’s James Norris Memorial Trophy, awarded to the league’s top defenseman.

The finalists were announced Monday, and voted on by members of the Profession­al Hockey Writers Associatio­n.

The NHL also said Boston center Patrice Bergeron, Philadelph­ia center Sean Couturier and St. Louis center Ryan O’Reilly are the three finalists for the Frank J. Selke Trophy, honoring the league’s top defensive forward. PLAYERS STAY RELATIVELY FREE OF CORONAVIRU­S >> The NHL says only two players tested positive for COVID-19 during the first five days of training camp last week.

The league, in consultati­on with its players, is not revealing the identity of players who test positive, or their teams. The two players who tested positive are self-isolating per national and local health protocols.

Training camps opened July 13, with 24 teams preparing to compete in an expanded playoff format in Toronto and Edmonton, Alberta, starting on Aug. 1.

PETRUSEV LEAVES GONZAGA, SIGNS WITH SERBIAN PRO TEAM >> Filip Petrusev confirmed he won’t return to Gonzaga this fall, instead signing a contract with Mega Bemax in his native Serbia. In the 201920 season, Petrusev was a key contributo­r for the Bulldogs, who were 31-2 on the season and 15-1 in West Coast Conference play. Petrusev, 20, also remains entered in the NBA draft.

The 6-foot-11 Petrusev played two seasons at Gonzaga. As a sophomore, he was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year after leading the Bulldogs in scoring (17.5 points) and rebounds (7.9).

MURRAY TO MISS 3M OPEN AFTER POSITIVE TEST >> Golfer Grayson Murray withdrew from the upcoming 3M Open following a positive test for COVID-19. He made the announceme­nt Sunday night on Instagram. He said he took a test after experienci­ng a runny nose, headache and loss of taste and smell.

Murray became the seventh PGA Tour player to test positive for the coronaviru­s.
