Crippled by the coronavirus pandemic, the Cloverleaf Family Bowl in Fremont will remain closed, the families that own the beloved business announced Friday.

Like many other businesses across the state, the bowling center, at 40645 Fremont Blvd., was ordered to shut its doors months ago to slow the spread of the coronavirus. The lack of income coupled with continued costs, including rent and utilities, drove the decision to call it quits, the Chambers and Hillman families said in a statement.

“Through the past fourplus months, we have held out hope for a reopening date, a date that has not come from the state or county of Alameda,” the statement said. “With the current status of the state of California, it appears that bowling is still months away from an opening date and especially in Alameda County.”

Cloverleaf Family Bowl has been a Fremont fixture for six decades. David and Marian Hillman became the owners of the bowling center in 1963, four years after it opened.

“Over the past 57 years, we have been fortunate to meet so many wonderful people and families,” the statement said. “Some folks started bowling with us in 1963 and are still league bowling with us in 2020. Be it league, casual bowling, special events or tournaments, we were always appreciative to see you enter through our doors.”

The families thanked the community for its support.

“We will miss Cloverleaf Family Bowl. We will miss our family of staff. We will miss our community and the customers that supported us for so many years,” the statement said. “This has been a gutwrenching sad time for our families and we have appreciated all of the support and wishes and prayers that you have provided.”
