49ers have resolved major roster issues
SANTACLARA>> The 49ers didn’t appear to have any major dilemmas to resolve before today’s 53-man roster unveiling. Surprises could happen, however.
The 49ers could shuttle some players on and off injury lists, while also selling castoff veterans on joining the expanded practice squad at a steep pay cut.
Here are nine questions to ponder regarding nine positions:
QUARTERBACK >> Do they release third-stringer C.J. Beathard to stash him on the practice squad?
RUNNING BACK >> Does undrafted rookie JaMycal Hasty unseat an incumbent such as Jeff Wilson Jr. or perhaps even Tevin Coleman, whose $4.6 million salary leads the running back corps?
WIDE RECEIVER >> Only three suited up for the Super Bowl, but more options abound this year down the depth chart, so who makes the cut as the fifth and possibly sixth wide receiver among Dante Pettis, Richie James Jr., Jauan Jennings and Kevin White (and free agent Mohamed Sanu)?
TIGHT END >> Are four too many to keep or can they retain an ideal quartet with George Kittle, Jordan Reed, Ross Dwelley and Charlie Woerner?
OFFENSIVE LINE >> Does
the interior line’s uncertainty impact if they keep a reserve center (Hroniss Grasu) at the expense of a reserve tackle (Justin Skule or Jaryd JonesSmith)?
DEFENSIVE LINE >> Does the stockpiling of defensive ends ruin the shot of interior prospects such as undrafted rookie Darrion Daniels and Kevin Givens?
LINEBACKER >> Can Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, a converted safety, capitalize off a good in camp and steal the job of a veteran, such as Azeez AlShaair, Mark Nzeocha or Joe Walker?
CORNERBACK >> Is veteran Dontae Johnson or rookie Tim Harris in play as a sub now that Jamar Taylor is cut and Jason Verrett is hurt?
SAFETY>> Has Johnathan Cyprien done enough in just two weeks to join a safety unit and potentially replace Marcell Harris, a fill-in starter the past two seasons.
