Expect Calaveras to look the same ‘for many years to come’
QDo you know if there are any plans to widen Highway 237? … Any rumors about widening 237 or Calaveras Boulevard through Milpitas?
— Alex Li, Linda
A. and others
ASome rumors you may like, but not this: There are no current plans to turn this sixlane freeway into eight lanes. Here’s what is being planned:
• Adding auxiliary or merging lanes from El Camino Real to Highway 85.
• Adding a carpool lane westbound at Calaveras Boulevard on-ramp.
• Extending the carpool lane from McCarthy Boulevard to Calaveras.
• The big change will be improvements to the El Camino Real/237 interchange. As for Calaveras, long-range plans call for converting this to six lanes.
In 2009, Milpitas adopted a traffic impact fee on new developments to help fund the widening of Calaveras over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. However, there is still a huge funding gap and nothing is imminent.
Former Milpitas Mayor
Bob Livengood told me in 1993 “unless something really strange happens, what Calaveras looks like today is what Calaveras will look like for many years to come.” So far, he has been right. It does look largely the way it did then.
When all this work will happen has yet to be determined.
QWhat’s up with the flashing sign on 237 that says HOV 3+ free and HOV 2 there will be a 50% discount starting in October. Is 237 being converted to a 3+ HOV like I-880 in Alameda County?
— Michael McWalters
AIt sure is. Carpools of three or more people can use the express lanes free, while those of two people get the discount. This will eventually be the rule on all express lanes.
QAre they ever going to do anything about the extremely stupid interchange ramp from west 237 to north 101? It backs up, sometimes for a mile or so every day, because some idiot panics at the curve and slows to 20 mph.
— Cindi Cabal, San Jose
AThe ramp changes at 85-237 may also extend to 101.
QI am turning in my old air polluting car for the California clunker rebate. I need proof of ownership for the past three years. I have my current and prior year registration cards. I need to have DMV print my registration card for 2018.
I have spent hours on the DMV website trying to find a link for printing older documents. Help!
Can you ask your DMV sources if they have a link that will allow me to print my old registration card or do I have to visit a DMV office?
— Roger Moraes
AGo online and request an informal vehicle record for $2 that will show your ownership, Otherwise, fill out an INF 1125 application and pay $5 for an official record.
